Summary
Responsible for assisting the Signs and Markings Supervisor in planning, scheduling, and distributing daily assignments for both signs and pavement marking tasks. This position works in a lead role and provides field supervision to the Senior Technician and all Signs & Markings Technicians. This position also coordinates and inspects pavement marking projects with private contractors working for the city.
Pay Range: $19.37 - $24.96 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Act as the supervisor in the event of the absence of the signs and markings supervisor.
Responsible for purchasing materials/equipment as needed
Monitor daily supplies and equipment to perform traffic sign and marking installation & maintenance
Assist the sign fabricator to make in-house specialized traffic signs as needed, or act as the sign fabricator when he is absent.
Oversee and lead all crews with pavement marking layout, installation, and removal.
Oversee and lead daily work involving sign installation, removal, repair, and maintenance of all traffic control signs, including overhead traffic signal-mounted control signs and specialized wayfinding signs.
Coordinate, operate, maintain, and repair various specialized and complex pavement marking equipment.
Lead and perform special event traffic control by coordinating with the city’s Police and Parks Departments in the planning and setup of barricades and cones for parade routes, festivals, block parties, 5K runs, and various other special events, including working after hours and on weekends, and coordinate that with other secondary employees and his supervisor.
Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly computer reports and files for the supervisor.
Investigate citizens’ complaints and trouble calls and distribute to other employees, recommend remedies, or repair as needed Using a laptop computer, Desktop Computer or IPAD, enter records and place them on a map of installed signs and markings using Opengov asset management program.
Trim trees or shrubbery causing visibility obstructions of traffic control signs by using chainsaws, cutters, and other various equipment
Help assist the signal division when needed
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Must have prior experience with signs and markings installation techniques and familiarity with various types of marking equipment
Experience with the Mini Mac 400 marking machine and Pre-Melter is preferred
Experience with various types of markings, layout, and procedures, in compliance with the TMUTCD.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience:
Excellent Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
IMSA or TxLTAP work zone certification
IMSA Level I and II Signs and Markings certification
Good Mechanical skills
Excellent experience in proper maintenance, guidelines & placement of traffic control signs and markings
Five (5) combined years in either the municipal or private sector are preferred to qualify for this position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Skill involving a wide variety of electronic and power hand tools
Skill in the use of various types of electronics, such as computers, laptops, or iPads
Skills in the use of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Access, Outlook, and Word
Skills in mathematics and computation
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in the English language
Skills or ability to operate various specialized vehicles and equipment used for sign placement, pavement markings, and bucket trucks
Ability to work in extreme heat and various other weather conditions.
Ability to work after hours, holidays, or weekends for special events
Ability to lead and oversee several secondary employees and crews
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
IMSA Work Zone certification or TxLTAP work zone certification course preferred
IMSA Level I and II Signs and Markings certification preferred
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
The incumbent works outdoors in high traffic areas with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Works with various tools at heights up to 30 feet.
Skills Required
