POSITION: Short Notice Childcare Assistant

SALARY: $20.34, per hour

REPORTS TO: ECE Site Supervisor

LOCATION: Head Start; Keller or Omak, Washington

Basic Functions: This is a non-exempt position. Short Notice position is an on-call role, and applicants must be prepared to report to work within one hour of receiving notification.  Provides supervised direct care to infant-to-preschool aged children and assistance at a center based child care facility.  Implements innovative age appropriate child-centered development and functioning exercises, for a preschool aged child care program that includes parenting education on occasion for parents.   

Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • Requires the equivalent of a high school diploma or proof of enrollment in High School.
  • Preferred applicants have experience working with students in a classroom or equivalent environment and successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards.
  • Incumbents assigned to infant and pre-school environments will be required to complete 30 credit hours Basics of Child Care and HIV/Blood borne pathogens, Safe Sleep, and Food Handlers, and after hire. Minimum age: 14.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices and an understanding of the goals and objectives of a preschool aged child care program in a school district environment.
  • Requires working knowledge of learning exercises and approaches that are appropriate for student parents.
  • Requires working knowledge of the needs and behavior of preschool aged children.
  • Requires working knowledge of proper sanitizing and sterilization methods, as well as cleaning materials and disinfectants.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to interact with student parents, parents of students, and staff.
  • Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret a teacher’s instructions in order to assist in instruction-oriented recreation activities of infant children.
  • Ability to understand the needs and differences of children and to reach and engage them in play.
  • Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems in children.
  • Requires the ability to perform indoors in an office and/or classroom environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary to a moderately active nature.
  • Requires near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and computer screens.
  • Requires hearing and speech ability for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to speak to small groups, and to hear sound prompts from equipment.
  • Requires the ability to move about office, classroom, and school grounds, and reach work materials.
  • Requires sufficient manual and finger dexterity to demonstrate teaching aids, to point out important words/figures to students, and to operate personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and move supplies, furniture, etc., of light-to-medium weight (under 50 pounds) on an intermittent basis.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.

Skills Required
