The typical salary range for this role falls between $50,838.00 - $67,784.00 per annum, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity, with future opportunities for performance-based pay and career progression. Job Description Summary:

Capilano University is committed to provide settlement and community connections activities and services to immigrants. Under the limited supervision of the Dean, Education, Health and Human Development, the Settlement Services Assistant works to help immigrants assisting them either individually or in groups including supporting them to access public services and community resources, by identifying needs and making appropriate referrals to community agencies and establishing a mentoring/hosting program in Sechelt, Squamish, Whistler or Pemberton.
The Settlement Services Assistant works individually with program participants to conduct personal needs assessments and handles sensitive and confidential information. The incumbent will promote the program in the community, arrange and attend community meetings to increase communication about immigrant related issues, and assists with the contract reporting

Job Description:

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 

  • Provide settlement services for immigrants individually and in groups to support them in successfully accessing public services and community resources.
  • Promote the program in the community.  
  • Conducts interviews with community organizations and immigrants.  
  • Identifies and assesses the needs of clients and makes appropriate referrals to community agencies. 
  • Create and implement a mentoring/hosting program for immigrants.  
  • Support community integration for immigrants.  
  • Attend community meetings to increase communication about immigrant related issues in Sechelt. 
  • Create and distribute a monthly newsletter.  
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and community forums on immigrant related issues for organizations and businesses.  
  • Set up records and prepare reports.  
  • Maintains sensitive and confidential personal information related to immigration status including federal Protected B information.  
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners.  
  • Speak at public information meetings about the project.  
  • Perform other duties as required. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS 

  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with internal and external contacts.  
  • Awareness of cultural norms and cultural sensitivity will be required.  
  • Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment. 
  • Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Effective marketing skills. 
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.  
  • Computer Skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, and an understanding of Website development. 
  • Must be flexible and able to manage a high work volume and conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Diploma in a related human/social service field 
  • Proficiency in a second language is an asset. 
  • Two years of related experience 

Additional Details:

Our standard work week is Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:00pm, or dependent on the needs of the department. 
This is a part time position offering 12.5 hours per week. The annual salary will be pro-rated to reflect the part time schedule.
