POSITION SUMMARY
The Service Technical Writer is responsible for developing, documenting, maintaining, and continuously improving standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, technical manuals, service documentation, and general business process documentation that support WeldFit's manufacturing, field service, and corporate operations. This role works closely with Operations, Service, Engineering, Quality, Safety, Human Resources, Training and Management teams to transform complex workflows into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation.
The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented professional with strong technical writing skills and the ability to gather information from subject matter experts, shop personnel, field technicians, and business leaders. This is a full-time onsite position based in Houston, Texas, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Documentation Development
- Develop, write, edit, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, policies, forms, checklists, and technical documentation.
- Create documentation supporting manufacturing, quality, service, engineering, safety, and general business operations.
- Develop process maps, flowcharts, training materials, and visual aids to support operational excellence.
- Translate complex technical and operational concepts into easy-to-understand documentation for employees at all levels.
- Ensure all documentation is standardized, accurate, and aligned with company objectives.
Process Analysis & Improvement
- Collaborate with department leaders and subject matter experts to document current-state processes and identify improvement opportunities.
- Observe manufacturing and service operations to accurately capture workflows and procedures.
- Review existing documentation and recommend revisions to improve efficiency, clarity, and compliance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives through process standardization and knowledge management.
Document Control & Compliance
- Manage document revisions, approvals, and version control processes.
- Maintain organized document repositories and ensure employees have access to current approved documentation.
- Support quality management systems, including ISO-related documentation requirements.
- Ensure documentation complies with applicable safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
- Assist during audits by providing documented procedures and supporting records.
Training & Communication
- Develop training materials, onboarding guides, job aids, and departmental reference manuals.
- Support departmental training initiatives through effective documentation and instructional content.
- Conduct interviews and information-gathering sessions with stakeholders to capture process knowledge.
- Facilitate communication between departments to ensure documentation reflects actual operational practices.
Collaboration
- Partner with Operations, Engineering, Service, Quality, Safety, and Human Resources teams to identify documentation needs.
- Serve as a resource for process documentation and best practices throughout the organization.
- Participate in cross-functional projects that require procedure development and process standardization.
- Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Business Administration, Communications, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of technical writing, procedure writing, business process documentation, or related experience.
- Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial, engineering, fabrication, oil and gas, or field service environment strongly preferred.
- Experience creating standard operating procedures and controlled documentation.
- Experience supporting quality management systems is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position is based onsite at WeldFit's Houston, Texas facility.
- Standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Frequent interaction with manufacturing personnel, field service technicians, engineering teams, and business departments.
- Must be able to walk through manufacturing, warehouse, and service areas to observe operations and gather information.
- Ability to sit, stand, and use computer equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting operational areas.
