Your role

The CBC Gem team is looking for a skilled Senior Writer (one-year contract) to write punchy, engaging audience-facing copy throughout the streaming service.
Working under the supervision of the Manager, CBC Gem Merchandising, you will write text copy that appears throughout CBC Gem including (but not limited to) short and long series descriptions; carousel copy; collection titles and descriptions.

We’re looking for someone who can take inputs from a range of sources ranging from independent producers, production executives, distributors, marketing assets, and translate these into scintillating copy with the voice of CBC Gem, drawing audiences in and leading them toward their next stream.

Advice and guidance will be available but initiative and independent judgment are also expected. Your work will involve close collaboration with multiple program units throughout CBC, as well as with our partners.
Since CBC Gem offers a range of both Video on Demand (VOD) and live programming, your role will also have a mix of both long-planned activities along with more responsive, quick-turn writing to respond to in-the-moment events.

Main responsibilities:

  • Writing audience-facing text copy throughout CBC Gem; including series and movie descriptions; collection titles and descriptions; carousel copy;
  • Working closely with the team to maintain a clear, authentic and vibrant voice;
  • Monitoring best practices in the streaming space for text copy and title packaging;
  • Maintaining a copy calendar and database of descriptions;
  • Immersing yourself in the CBC Gem content library;
  • Reviewing content performance to make data-driven decisions;
  • Working closely with cross-functional teams across the corporation including, but not limited to, the Gem Programming Office, Merchandising, Marketing and Publicity, and Digital Product & Innovation.

Your profile:

  • University degree or equivalent;
  • Five years of relevant experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to work under deadlines and with multiple priorities;
  • Keen interest in and an ability to keep pace and adapt to the evolving trends of the streaming media space;
  • Knowledge of and affinity for CBC, its programming and services, and understanding of the media industry;
  • Knowledge of CBC’s journalistic standards and practice an asset (not required);
  • The ability to contribute to the diversity of perspectives on the team with ideas that will help connect with and grow new audiences;
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to, underrepresented communities across Canada;

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
