Description and Requirements
Job Title: Senior UX Researcher (Product Strategist) US Group Benefits
Job Location: Remote United States
The Company:
MetLife (NYSE: MET), through its subsidiaries and affiliates, is one of the world's leading financial services companies, providing insurance, annuities, employee benefits and asset management to help its individual and institutional customers navigate their changing world. Founded in 1868, MetLife serves approximately 100 million customers, has operations in more than 40 countries and holds leading market positions in the United States, Japan, Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. MetLife has an employee population of approximately 43,000 and is ranked #50 on the Fortune 500 list for 2022. MetLife is intentionally cultivating a purpose-driven and inclusive culture that values and builds a diversity of talent to innovate for today, tomorrow and the future so that the company can continue to fulfill its promise to its customers in the communities it serves around the world.
Global Brand and Marketing at MetLife:
The UX Research and Strategy Team at MetLife sits within the Marketing organization, and this organization as whole is on a journey to create a high performing team supported by a set of modern capabilities. We are implementing agile ways of working, focusing on data-driven research and outcomes, and recruiting top talent to support this vision.
This role sits within Global Brand Marketing, and is a part of the Customer Experience and Design (CXD) team. The CXD team is responsible for defining principles, standards, and assets for digital experiences at MetLife. Its team members (designers, content strategists, UX Researchers and Experience Strategists) are either embedded into agile teams aligned to products, or customer journey-based value pools.
The Role:
Within the CXD team, our UX Research and Strategy team consists of two groups:

  • Experience Strategists, focused on macro-level research like cross-product journey mapping and persona development/maintenance
  • UX Researchers, who act as Product Strategist (this role), and are focused on micro-level research within agile product development cycles

Collectively, the Metlife Experience Strategist and UX Researchers' mission is to use qualitative and quantitative data to build, test, and refine hypotheses about our products, customers, and markets.
Our mixed-methods approach informs and improves baseline understanding, and supports decision- making frameworks that power better outcomes for end users and the business. We combine our micro and macro level research and strategy, and collaborate for middle-range work, so that we can generalize our insights beyond a single context and continuously refine MetLife's holistic product ecosystem. Both the UX Research and Experience Strategy disciplines at MetLife are growing. Our team is small but enthusiastic, with an emerging community of practice!
As a Senior UX Researcher, your work will focus on testing and refining micro-journeys within each product. You will work alongside product, design, and engineering to offer research insights to support prioritization of work within the agile framework, frame opportunities, and support decision making during the agile development process. UX Research also collaborates with key partners to define product analytics strategies, and uses product data analytics to form and test hypotheses about user behavior and needs.
As a Senior UX Researcher, you will draw upon a wide range of qualitative and quantitative skills to support your work including moderated and unmoderated usability testing, participatory design, focus groups, in-depth interviews, contextual inquiry, surveys, product data analytics, A/B testing, concept testing, design sprints, co-creation sessions, and design strategy frameworks.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior UX Researcher, you will plan and conduct research studies on behalf of multiple agile teams delivering digital experiences for the US Group Benefits, Retirement Income Solutions, and MetLife Investment Management lines of business. These studies may include a range of quantitative, qualitative, exploratory, and evaluative methods. You will:

  • Partner with Product Managers / Owners, Product Marketers, UX Designers, and Content Strategists to identify and shape research studies focused on user behavior and attitudes
  • Plan, manage, and track the execution of research studies in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
  • Socialize insights and recommendations in creative, compelling, and memorable ways through research reports, highlight reels, and other outputs
  • Shape recommendations for bearing out our company purpose and CX strategy through the experiences we deliver
  • Align and efficiently execute critical insights while working with a large group of stakeholders

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 4+ years proven experience in UX research and/or user research roles.

  • Significant expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods, exploratory and evaluative research, and a demonstrated ability match the right methodology with learning objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with the priorities of cross-functional collaborators in product, tech, business, and design.
  • Hold a degree, professional accreditation, or equivalent years of professional experience in UX research, psychology, human factors, or a related field.
  • Comfort with independently planning, prioritizing, conducting, analyzing, and communicating research.
  • A strong understanding of product development cycles and the role of user / UX research on product teams.
  • A demonstrated ability to create influential reporting or communication pieces.
  • Ability to learn/understand the businesses you will be supporting.
  • Strong record of problem-solving, particularly in complex, multi-dimensional programs.
  • Proficiency with remote testing and research tools. Experience with UserTesting or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Experience conducting user research for big companies, in B2B2C contexts, on agile product teams, and/or for insurance companies is a plus.
  • Product data analytics experience and/or experience leveraging product analytics tools like Pendo or Medallia a plus

The wage range for applicants for this position is $81,500 - $137,400.
