Function / Area: Senior Underwriter
Reporting to: Underwriting Centre Manager
Position Summary
Senior Underwriter specialising in Technology E&O and Cyber responsible for working with the Underwriting Manager, setting strategy, taking referrals and underwriting a broad range of moderate and complex risks in a book of business. This role suits an experienced underwriter who is keen to develop their portfolio development skills. Works within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination. Utilises underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations while finding creative solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Alongside the Underwriting Manager, develop the strategy for the Technology E&O and Cyber portfolio
- Provide training and referrals for underwriters in the field
- Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure, at a level appropriate to the position, that appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance
- Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring sophisticated underwriting skills. Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
- Determines appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
- Prepares quotations and answers questions from Brokers, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management along with proposed solutions as necessary. Negotiates with Brokers to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
- Notifies Brokers of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations.
- Analyses quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports for management review.
- Markets products and services through the brokerage community and makes field visits. Develops and maintains Broker relationships.
- May provide guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and freely shares information with others.
- Utilise advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities.
- Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position
- Strong knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
- Demonstrated high level of technical expertise and product specific knowledge.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong ability to identify, analyse and solve problems as well as the ability to learn rapidly, adapt quickly to change, and to manage and prioritise multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and to make critical business decisions effectively.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
