Job Description

We have seeking a Senior Terrestrial Biologist or Ecologist for our Ecological Services Team in Mississauga. The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of monitoring and assessment programs in support of mining, nuclear and linear development and other projects as their skillset applies. Monitoring may include the collection of water, sediment, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish and surveys for birds, bats, mammals, other wildlife, trees and other vegetation. In addition, the successful candidate will support and be involved in data summary, data analysis and report preparation. The position may require travel to locations throughout Canada for periods as long as two weeks with expenses paid. The successful candidate will be required to conduct fieldwork in inclement weather, at remote field locations. In addition, some field programs require night work - when active sampling of nocturnal organisms is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input and prepare science and engineering services proposals
  • Liaise with clients, government and/or regulatory bodies as well as contractors
  • Design field work for a variety of projects, such as environmental assessments, biological surveys, environmental monitoring etc.
  • Prepare technical specifications and reports (e.g. Fish and Fish Habitat, Existing Conditions, Environmental Impact Statement, Request for Review and Fisheries Act Authorizations, etc.)
  • Take on an active role in expanding the Ecological Service line of the firm, particularly in support of EA and IA both provincially and federally. 
  • Take an active role in the recruitment of staff to support the environmental business line.
  • Leads initiatives that support and expand business development in the environmental sector.
  • Plan field work logistics
  • Project Management, delivery and budget tracking of complex projects.
  • Strengthen the technical skills of other staff through mentoring and by assigning project responsibility.

Qualifications

Applicants for this role MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of a university degree in a related field (biology, ecology, wildlife, natural resources).
  • Minimum fifteen years of experience in biology, ecology and environmental assessment projects.
  • Design skills with good working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of Programs and other standard software for reporting, data analysis and communications
  • Ability to independently prepare professional reports for review by other senior staff and clients
  • Ability to guide and or perform statistical analysis associated with ecological systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (French an asset)
  • Good attention to detail, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team, and independently in the field
  • Familiarity with environmental legislation including the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Migratory Bird Act, Species Conservation Act, Endangered Species Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Fisheries Act, etc. is essential.
  • Familiarity in guiding or contributing to environmental assessment / impact assessment under federal, provincial and municipal legislation.
  • Familiarity with MNR, Conservation Authority, DFO, MTO and other regulatory/jurisdictional requirements for environmental impact evaluation.
  • Field identification skills including terrestrial, aquatic and avian species; knowledge of Species of Conservation Concern in Ontario
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle and be willing to travel throughout Ontario
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work (able to life 50 lbs); and,
  • Willingness to travel and/or work shifts (twelve hour day and night shifts).

Additional Assets

  • Certification or familiarity with electro-fishing, wetland evaluation (e.g. OWES), Ecological Land Classification and would be an asset.
  • Motivated and willing to participate in business development inline with the companies strategic initiatives.
