What You'll Do
The Senior Supply Chain Engineer – Electronics owns the supply of all electronic, electrical and RF commodities that HyPrix buys. The position holder is the domain expert for these commodities, from the first schematic to series production.
The commodities include semiconductors, passive components, PCBs, PCB assemblies (PCBAs), cables, harnesses, connectors, power supplies and batteries. They also include specialised sensors and RF components, which often have few suppliers, long lead times and export controls.
Commodity strategy. Write and update a sourcing strategy for each electronic commodity. Include the supplier base, cost targets, lead times, risks and the indigenous content plan.
Component selection. Review BOMs and schematics with the electronics team before design freeze. Give advice on lifecycle status, lead time, price and second source for each part. Prefer parts that more than one manufacturer makes.
Authorised supply. Buy from manufacturers and authorised distributors. Use brokers only when no authorised stock exists, and then only with test and full traceability. Keep a certificate of conformance for each lot. Make sure that stores apply ESD and moisture-sensitivity (MSL) controls.
PCB, PCBA and harness suppliers. Qualify PCB fabricators, EMS assembly houses and harness makers. Agree with engineering on turnkey or consigned supply for each build. Control the build package: Gerbers, BOM, assembly drawings, IPC class and test requirements. Do first article checks with the quality team.
Specialised sensors. Source inertial sensors, GNSS receivers and antennas, EO/IR sensors and air-data sensors. Compare performance data, calibration, environmental qualification and export status for each candidate with the avionics team.
Sensor acceptance. Agree the calibration data and acceptance test data with each sensor supplier. Make sure that each unit arrives with its calibration certificate and serial number.
RF components. Source antennas, RF modules, datalink radios, amplifiers, filters, and RF cables and connectors. Check frequency, power, gain, VSWR and test data against the specification with the RF engineer.
Radio equipment approvals. Prepare the technical data for WPC approvals of radio equipment, and for foreign export licences of controlled sensors and RF parts.
Batteries. Source lithium cells and battery packs with UN 38.3 test reports and safety data sheets. Plan dangerous-goods transport with the freight forwarder.
Lifecycle and obsolescence. Monitor the lifecycle status and the PCN and EOL notices for each part. Plan last-time buys, and approve alternates with engineering. Keep safety stock for long-lead parts.
Controlled parts. Identify parts that need end-user certificates or foreign export licences. Prepare the technical data for these requests. The Senior Manager owns the licence application.
Negotiation and agreements. Lead RFQs. Negotiate price, lead time, MOQ and scheduled deliveries within the delegation of authority. Set frame agreements with key distributors and EMS suppliers. Share design data only under NDA, and only to the extent that each supplier needs.
Engineering changes. Take each new drawing or BOM revision from the PLM system, and send it to the affected suppliers. Make sure that each supplier builds to the current revision, and close open orders against old revisions.
Country of origin. Record the country of origin for each part. Replace parts from restricted countries when the customer or the Ministry of Defence requires it.
Supplier performance. Keep an OTIF and quality scorecard for each supplier. Hold regular reviews. Get a recovery plan when a supplier misses a date.
Supplier development. Find Indian sources and form-fit-function equivalents for imported parts. Develop Indian EMS and harness suppliers until they qualify.
Bid support. Supply part costs, lead times and lifecycle data for proposals and cost estimates.
Team. Give electronics RFQ, follow-up and PO tasks to the Supply Chain Engineer. Train the engineer and review the work.
Requirements
Minimum Experience (Years)
6 years of electronic component sourcing, commodity management or EMS supply chain, in aerospace, defence, space, telecom or automotive electronics.
HyPrix prefers this experience, but it is not mandatory. Demonstrated capability is more important than years.
Required Skills
Components. Good knowledge of active and passive components, PCB fabrication, SMT assembly and harness manufacture.
Standards. Good knowledge of IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620.
Technical data. Ability to read a BOM, a schematic and a datasheet, and to assess an alternate part with engineering.
Supply networks. Experience with manufacturer and distributor networks, and with part-search and lifecycle tools.
Obsolescence. Experience with obsolescence control and last-time buys.
Sensors and RF. Ability to read sensor and RF datasheets and test reports, for example bias stability, noise, gain, VSWR and noise figure.
Systems. Experience with ERP or MRP systems.
A bachelor's degree in electronics, electrical, electronics and communication or instrumentation engineering.
Advantageous Skills/Qualifications
Experience with military, automotive (AEC-Q) or space-grade parts and their screening.
Experience with the import of controlled parts, end-user certificates and foreign export licence processes.
Experience to source inertial sensors, GNSS receivers, EO/IR sensors, or RF and microwave components.
Experience with batteries and cells.
Knowledge of counterfeit-part prevention to AS6081 or AS5553.
Knowledge of the indigenous content rules of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP).
Experience to develop Indian EMS or harness suppliers.
Knowledge of PLM or PDM tools for BOM and revision control.
