SENIOR, SOFTWARE ENGINEER

Position Summary...As a Senior Software Engineer at Walmart, you will be a senior technical contributor and de facto technical lead within the Walmart Business Tech team in Chennai. You will own the architecture, design, and delivery of complex full-stack capabilities across Next.js/React.js front-end and Java/Spring Boot back-end systems that power retail and eCommerce experiences for hundreds of millions of customers. Beyond hands-on engineering, you will mentor engineers, drive cross-functional technical decisions, and raise the quality bar across the team

About Team

 This is the team which builds reusable technologies that aid in acquiring customers, onboarding and empowering merchants besides ensuring a seamless experience for both these stakeholders. They also optimize tariffs and assortment, adhering to the Walmart philosophy - Everyday Low Cost. In addition to ushering in affordability, they also create personalized experiences for customers the omnichannel way, across all channels - in-store, on the mobile app and websites. Our team is responsible for design, development, and operations of large-scale consumer facing applications. We focus on real-time transactions, user experience flows, streaming analytics across web and native apps. We interact with multiple teams across the company to provide scalable robust technical solutions. 

What You'll Do

• Own end-to-end architecture and delivery of complex full-stack features — Next.js/React.js front-end, Java/Spring Boot/Spring WebFlux back-end, REST APIs, Kafka event streams, and SQL/NoSQL data layer integrations.
• Lead technical design discussions: author design documents, conduct architecture reviews, and define engineering standards covering the full technology stack.
• Drive API design strategy — RESTful APIs and Kafka-based event contracts built for scalability, versioning, backward compatibility, and developer ergonomics.
• Set the quality standard through disciplined TDD, rigorous code reviews, and enforcement of SOLID/clean architecture principles across JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java codebases.
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to break down ambiguous requirements into well-scoped, actionable engineering plans.
• Lead performance engineering — resolve bottlenecks across front-end (Core Web Vitals, bundle optimization) and back-end (throughput, latency, SQL/NoSQL query optimization, Kafka consumer lag).
• Own service reliability — define SLOs, implement observability (logging, tracing, metrics), and lead incident response and RCAs for production systems on GCP and Azure.
• Champion CI/CD and DevOps culture — design pipeline improvements, enforce test coverage gates, and lead adoption of GitOps and progressive delivery on Kubernetes.
• Evaluate and introduce new technologies; produce proof-of-concepts and drive adoption across the team.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through pair programming, design reviews, and structured feedback; design and conduct technical interviews.
• Integrate and champion AI-powered development tooling across the team — code generation, AI-assisted testing, copilot tooling, and automated code review.
• Lead the design and delivery of AI/ML-powered product features — personalization engines, intelligent search, GenAI-assisted workflows — in collaboration with data and ML teams.
• Establish best practices for responsible AI feature integration: latency, fallback handling, observability of model outputs, and graceful degradation.

What You'll Bring

• 6+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated seniority in full-stack development.
• Expert-level proficiency in Next.js and React.js — App Router, Server Components, streaming SSR, advanced TypeScript patterns, and performance tuning.
• Expert-level back-end engineering in Java with Spring Boot and Spring WebFlux — microservices design, reactive patterns, event-driven architecture with Kafka, and high-throughput REST API design.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems — consistency models, caching strategies (Redis, CDN), eventual consistency, and fault tolerance patterns.
• Proven experience with SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis) databases at scale — schema design, indexing, query optimization.
• Strong cloud platform expertise on GCP and/or Azure — managed services, IAM, networking, and cost-conscious architecture.
• Proficiency with Kubernetes and Docker for containerized, cloud-native service deployment and operations.
• Demonstrated end-to-end observability ownership — structured logging, distributed tracing, alerting, and runbook-driven incident management.
• Track record of technical leadership — influencing engineering direction, unblocking teams, and delivering high-complexity projects on schedule.
• Fluency in AI/ML integration patterns and a track record of championing AI tooling adoption across engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building and scaling eCommerce platforms — catalog, search, cart, checkout, health/wellness, or optical verticals — serving high-concurrency traffic.
• Hands-on experience with micro-frontend architecture, module federation, and design system integration at enterprise scale.
• Experience with progressive delivery (canary/blue-green) and platform engineering practices on Kubernetes.
• Experience with AI/LLM orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Vertex AI Agent Builder, or similar) and integrating GenAI into customer-facing products.
• Background in building or operating internal developer platforms, SDKs, or shared engineering libraries.
• Open-source contributions or published technical writing (engineering blog, conference talks, RFC authorship).
• Experience leading technical hiring — designing interview loops, calibrating candidates, and contributing to engineering growth strategy.
