At Caris, we understand that cancer is an ugly word—a word no one wants to hear, but one that connects us all. That’s why we’re not just transforming cancer care—we’re changing lives.

We introduced precision medicine to the world and built an industry around the idea that every patient deserves answers as unique as their DNA. Backed by cutting-edge molecular science and AI, we ask ourselves every day: “What would I do if this patient were my mom?” That question drives everything we do.

But our mission doesn’t stop with cancer. We're pushing the frontiers of medicine and leading a revolution in healthcare—driven by innovation, compassion, and purpose.

Join us in our mission to improve the human condition across multiple diseases. If you're passionate about meaningful work and want to be part of something bigger than yourself, Caris is where your impact begins.

Position Summary

Caris Life Sciences serves hundreds of thousands of molecular cases a year and continues to grow at double-digit rates. Its molecular, imaging, and clinical-outcomes data support software that helps ensure a cancer patient's report is right, complete, and on time.

The Senior Software Engineer - Clinical Software Products delivers senior-level engineering across Caris's clinical application portfolio: product delivery, reliability, and incremental modernization of the production systems that support regulated clinical workflows.

This assignment supports report generation and template capabilities for clinical result documents. Engineers deliver report types, template enhancements, and rendering-pipeline improvements while maintaining reliability, traceability, and change-control discipline.

The engineering environment supports advanced AI coding assistants and agentic workflows across design, implementation, and test generation. Characterization tests and golden-master replay validation provide executable evidence. Onboarding is harness-first: the engineer builds or extends characterization tests to capture current behavior as repeatable validation evidence.

Delivery runs on CI/CD, automated testing, application-level observability, and risk-based release governance aligned with current FDA Computer Software Assurance guidance. Representative technologies across the portfolio include Java, TypeScript, browser-based application frameworks, server-side JavaScript, and selected enterprise Java components. The interview process covers the specific assignment and technology stack.

Reporting to an Engineering Manager or Senior Engineering Manager within Clinical Software Engineering, this senior individual contributor designs, builds, and maintains clinical software applications governed by SOX financial controls and FDA regulatory requirements. The role leads technical delivery on an assigned product team, participates in architecture and design decisions, and upholds the engineering and compliance standards those systems require.

Location: Irving, Texas (Dallas–Fort Worth), on-site/hybrid, minimum three days per week on campus; co-located with Caris's laboratory and clinical operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain features and components across Caris's clinical software platforms: well-structured, testable, documented code that holds up in a regulated production environment.
  • Lead and contribute to design and architecture discussions, laying out the technical options and trade-offs that inform the team's decisions.
  • Give and receive peer code review, holding code-quality standards and surfacing issues that could affect system correctness, performance, or compliance.
  • Work with product management to sharpen requirements, name the technical constraints, and estimate backlog items.
  • Write and maintain the technical record: design documents, architecture decision records, and operational runbooks that meet SOX and FDA change-control obligations.
  • Instrument, monitor, and support production systems; participate in incident response and root-cause analysis for production issues.
  • Build automated test coverage across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels as first-class engineering work.
  • Automate the recurring engineering and operational work that delivery turns up: repeated manual steps become scripted, reviewed automation, not standing process.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers through code review, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
  • Make the case for technical-debt remediation that meaningfully improves system reliability, maintainability, or compliance posture.
  • Work AI-first: use AI coding assistants and agentic workflows as daily practice across design, implementation, and test generation, with peer and engineering review as the quality gate.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining production software systems.
  • Hands-on across the full SDLC in a team setting: requirements refinement, design, implementation, testing, and release.
  • A track record of writing and maintaining automated tests for production software, at the unit, integration, or end-to-end level.
  • Fluency in code review and in applying engineering standards to shared codebases.
  • Hands-on fluency with AI coding assistants and agentic development workflows in real engineering work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical laboratory, diagnostics, or life sciences software environments.
  • Familiarity with agile delivery frameworks and the tooling around them.
  • Cloud-native application development and deployment patterns.
  • Ability to lead technical design discussions and explain architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience mentoring engineers through code review, pair programming, or structured knowledge sharing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to complex, regulated production systems.
  • Experience in environments governed by FDA requirements, SOX controls, CLIA, or HIPAA. Regulated-domain experience is preferred, not required.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.

Training

  • All job-specific, safety, and compliance training is assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.

Other

  • This role may require periodic travel to other Caris sites or partner locations. After-hours response to emergency production issues and participation in periodic scheduled on-call rotations may be required.

Conditions of Employment:  Individual must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, credit check ( applicable for certain positions) and reference verification.

This job description reflects management’s assignment of essential functions. Nothing in this job description restricts management’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.
