digiLab is a pioneering AI company helping organisations solve the most complex and high-stakes problems with ML and UQ.
The Role
The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining digiLab's AI platform, applying expertise in Python, AWS, and machine learning while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Summary Generated by Built In

digiLab is a formative AI company with world-leading specialists in uncertainty quantification, applied where the stakes are highest and the margin for error is smallest.

Our customers are among the largest and most advanced engineering and science-led organisations in the world, and they're using our technology to tackle some of society's biggest challenges. How do we make fusion energy a commercial reality? Can we drive down the cost of renewable energy and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future? How do we support coral reef restoration, or strengthen Britain's national security? These are just a few of the critical questions our technology is helping to answer.

At the heart of our work is the Uncertainty Engine, digiLab's trustworthy and explainable AI platform, enabling our customers to accelerate innovation, reduce risk, and deliver real value through more confident decisions.

We are looking for ambitious team members to help shape our pioneering technology and tackle some of the world's most impactful problems.

The role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to help build the Uncertainty Engine - the platform at the heart of everything we do at digiLab. In this role, you'll design and build the scalable, secure systems that power trustworthy AI for customers tackling some of society's hardest problems.

This is a hands-on technical role that combines deep backend expertise with a collaborative, product-minded approach.

What you'll do

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of high-quality software, owning solutions from architecture through to deployment
  • Build scalable systems using AWS, Python, MongoDB, and other modern technologies
  • Embed security best practices across the full software development lifecycle
  • Own and improve our CI/CD pipelines to keep deployments fast, reliable, and repeatable
  • Apply site reliability engineering principles to strengthen system performance and resilience
  • Partner with product management to translate business requirements into elegant technical solutions
  • Design clean, consistent RESTful APIs
  • Provide technical support and lead incident investigations
  • Champion Scrum and drive continuous improvement in how the team works
  • Foster a collaborative, learning-oriented environment where engineers grow
  • In addition to backend work, you may also be required to support tasks on the frontend — we value engineers who enjoy working across the stack
  • Adopt AI tools to assist and accelerate your work

Duties may evolve, and you may be asked to take on other reasonable responsibilities within your competence as we grow.

Your Experience

  • Significant industry experience building production software
  • Deep Python expertise, with clean, logical, self-explanatory code
  • Proven experience building production APIs with FastAPI (or similar async Python frameworks)
  • Hands-on experience deploying AWS infrastructure as code (IaC)
  • Degree-level qualification in computer science or a related field
  • Experience with DevOps and MLOps
  • Solid grasp of software design patterns, SOLID and DRY principles, and architectural patterns
  • Confidence with Git/GitHub, Docker and containerisation, Linux, bash, and the command line
  • Command of the testing pyramid and automated testing types (unit, component, smoke, performance, load, end-to-end)
  • Familiarity with modern statistical ML and AI tooling, including NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas
  • A track record of collaborating in a fast-paced agile team, ideally using Scrum

Nice to have

  • A Master's-level qualification in a STEM field
  • Frontend experience: HTML, CSS, React, JavaScript/TypeScript
  • An eye for UI/UX design principles
  • Experience with PyTorch or other deep-learning libraries
  • An understanding of Bayesian statistics
