About the opportunity

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take ownership of building and evolving server-side systems and data-intensive services, primarily using Scala. You will work on a meaningful product with an impact on healthcare and diagnostics, developing distributed systems, APIs and processing pipelines that support complex clinical and research workflows. Rather than building simple CRUD services, you will tackle complex, non-trivial back-end challenges where scalability, correctness, performance and reliability are critical in a regulated domain. You will have a high level of ownership and the opportunity to influence system architecture, technical direction and key engineering decisions. Exposure to Scala, functional programming or Python is a plus, as parts of our back-end ecosystem use these technologies. You will also contribute to mentoring and raising back-end engineering standards across the team.

Your tasks

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable back-end services using Scala
  • Develop and evolve APIs and services supporting data-intensive workflows
  • Work on distributed systems and asynchronous processing pipelines
  • Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability of back-end components
  • Collaborate closely with product, front-end, data, and DevOps teams
  • Drive back-end architecture decisions and best practices
  • Write high-quality, well-tested, and maintainable code
  • Review code and mentor mid-level engineers
  • Contribute to technical discovery, estimates, and feasibility discussions

Your profile

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on experience using Java in production systems (Java 8/11/17+).
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design and software architecture principles.
  • Experience building and operating distributed back-end systems, including concurrency, asynchronous programming and data processing.
  • Strong experience designing and consuming REST APIs; GraphQL experience is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of back-end testing practices (JUnit, Mockito or similar), alongside SQL and NoSQL database experience.
  • Strong experience with Git workflows and code reviews.

Nice to have

  • Functional programming experience, ideally with Scala, including exposure to Akka, ZIO, Cats or other Scala ecosystem tools relevant to existing Scala services.
  • Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation or data processing, alongside experience with event-driven or streaming architectures.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), containerised deployments and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience working in distributed international teams, with exposure to healthcare, biotech or other regulated software domains.
