Senior Software Engineer (Java) - Karachi

What is the role?

dotCMS is a cloud-based Universal CMS that is changing how enterprises deploy digital experiences. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Software Engineer to join our dynamic tech - Debt team.

In this role, you will be instrumental in a high-impact initiative to modernize our platform by transitioning from a monolithic architecture to a headless, API-driven model. This is a hands-on coding position that also involves overseeing team deliverables and leading projects end-to-end. Success in this role requires a strong sense of ownership, the ability to balance technical depth with business objectives, and the drive to take features from concept through to delivery.

This is a
full-time contractor
position based in
Karachi, operating in a possibility of a
hybrid work environment
and later it can be a regular feature. The work schedule follows either an
afternoon shift
from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM or an
evening shift
from 3:00 PM to midnight (UTC+05:00), both including a one-hour break.

What you’ll bring to the team: 

• Lead backend development using Java technology.
• Lead the modernization of our platform by driving the migration from a monolithic to a headless, API-driven architecture, combining hands-on development with project oversight and end-to-end feature ownership.
• Design solutions with a customer-centric mindset, ensuring features solve real user pain points and deliver measurable value.
• Leverage AI tools and automation to optimize workflows, enhance product capabilities, and improve development efficiency.
• Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code while promoting best practices.
• Participate in peer code reviews to uphold high coding standards and share knowledge across the team.
• Actively engage in Agile ceremonies including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, product ideation and kickoff, retrospectives, and product demos.
• Mentor junior engineers when needed and ensure technical requirements are met.
• Contribute to frontend development using TypeScript and Angular if needed
• Effectively communicate with stakeholders translating technical concepts into clear business value, and demonstrate delivered features to internal teams.
• Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and team collaboration.
• Contribute to the product roadmap by identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement based on technical insights and customer feedback.
• Ensure all code and processes comply with established security and data privacy requirements.

Why we get excited about you:

• 6+ years of hands-on experience in Java software development, including core Java and frameworks.
• Solid understanding and practical experience with REST APIs.
• Experience working on projects involving monolith-to-headless migration.
• Strong ownership mindset with the ability to lead projects, balance technical depth with business priorities, and drive features from concept to delivery.
• Proven ability to balance technical excellence with business objectives and user needs.
• Experience with AI integration or using AI tools to enhance development and product capabilities.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
• Strong product thinking abilities; understanding the "why" behind features and how they contribute to the broader product strategy.
• Advanced English communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
