Senior Software Engineer I/II

You will work as part of a collaborative engineering team, contributing to the ongoing development and stability of the AIS platform — supporting insurers, suppliers, police forces and other organisations across the UK and internationally.
Our platform makes use of modern AWS infrastructure alongside a proven PHP and MySQL technology stack, with a dynamic Angular front end, delivering reliable and scalable solutions to the insurance ecosystem.
You will work across the full software development lifecycle, from design and development through to deployment and operational support, working closely with engineers, product managers and stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes.

What You'll Be Working On 
The AIS platform supports multiple products used across the UK insurance market, and your work will directly contribute to keeping those products reliable, performant and evolving to meet customer needs.
You will work with technologies including:
•    PHP-based back-end services and APIs
•    Angular front-end applications
•    MySQL databases
•    AWS cloud infrastructure
•    RESTful APIs and third-party integrations
•    CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments
The work you deliver will help insurers process claims faster, improve decision making and deliver better outcomes for their customers.
Key Responsibilities
•    Maintain, enhance and develop features within the AIS platform
•    Build and support PHP back-end services and RESTful APIs
•    Develop and maintain Angular front-end interfaces
•    Design and optimise MySQL database schemas, queries and stored procedures
•    Investigate and resolve bugs, performance issues and production incidents
•    Contribute to the design and evolution of platform architecture and shared services
•    Work within Agile development processes, including sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives
•    Collaborate with Product Managers to refine requirements, estimate work and deliver features iteratively
•    Implement and maintain automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes
•    Provide third-level technical support where required
•    Produce and maintain technical documentation
•    Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices, tooling and platform reliability
 

Qualifications
Essential Requirements
•    3+ years professional experience building and maintaining commercial software systems
•    Strong experience developing server-side applications using PHP (Laravel, Symfony or similar frameworks preferred)
•    Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and JSON-based integrations
•    Experience working with MySQL, including schema design, query optimisation and performance tuning
•    Front-end development experience with Angular
•    Experience building or deploying applications on AWS cloud infrastructure
•    Experience using Git or modern source control systems
•    Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments
•    A methodical approach to problem solving, debugging and production support
•    A passion for technology and a desire to continuously learn and improve
Highly Desirable
•    Experience working with AWS serverless services (Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway)
•    Experience working within Agile / Scrum development environments
•    Knowledge of event-driven architecture or message bus technologies
•    Experience implementing Test-Driven Development (TDD)
•    Understanding of software design patterns and clean architecture principles
•    Familiarity with AI development tools or AI-assisted engineering workflows
•    Experience working within the insurance or financial services industry
 
What We're Looking For 
We're looking for a well-rounded developer who is as comfortable maintaining and improving existing systems as they are building new features. You should be confident working across the full stack — PHP back-end services, MySQL databases and Angular front ends — and be someone who takes ownership of the quality and reliability of the software they deliver.
A background in, or enthusiasm for, the insurance sector would be a bonus, though it is not essential.
