About the Team:
The technology desk at the Post is dedicated to cover China’s technology trends, businesses and people and their impact on the world. Purpose of the Position:
The South China Morning Post is seeking an experienced reporter to join an ambitious team covering the semiconductor industry—the frontline of the global tech war and a cornerstone of China’s technological ambitions. The successful candidate will have a proven record of deep, incisive reporting on the silicon supply chain, from chip design and EDA tools to foundry manufacturing and lithography. We need someone who can cut through the noise of "chip self-sufficiency" narratives to deliver fresh technical and geopolitical insights to a sophisticated, global readership. In this role, you will:
- Deep-dive into China’s semiconductor ecosystem, covering the push for domestic alternatives in equipment, materials, and high-end logic/memory chips.
- Monitor and analyze global export controls, sanctions, and their specific impact on the Chinese semiconductor roadmap.
- Drive expansive reporting projects on foundry capacity, mature vs. leading-edge nodes, and emerging chip architectures (e.g., RISC-V), while remaining nimble enough to cover breaking news.
- Cultivate a deep network of industry sources, including engineers, fab managers, supply chain analysts, and policymakers.
- Conduct exclusive interviews with industry veterans, C-suite executives at top-tier firms (SMIC, Huawei/HiSilicon, etc.), and global semi-analysts.
- Research and write accurate stories on how chip shortages or breakthroughs affect downstream industries like EVs, AI, and telecommunications.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Degree holder with a minimum of 5 years of reporting experience; previous experience covering semiconductors, hardware engineering, or industrial tech is highly preferred.
- Deep understanding of global semiconductor supply chains and the geopolitical significance of the "Silicon Shield."
- Familiarity with technical concepts such as node sizes (nm), packaging technology, and chip-making equipment (ASML/lithography).
- Strong team player capable of working under stress and meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
- Professional fluency in written Chinese and spoken Mandarin is essential for high-level sourcing in Mainland China.
