ABOUT BESTOW

Life insurance is one of the world's most important products. It's also one of the hardest to build, distribute, and modernize. Bestow exists to change that.

Bestow is a leading vertical technology platform serving some of the largest and most innovative life insurers. Our platform unifies the fragmented, legacy value chain, enabling carriers to launch products in weeks instead of years. Carriers choose us to scale and operate at unprecedented speed, powered by AI and automation.

Bestow isn't selling policies. We're building the infrastructure that helps an entire industry move faster, reach more people, and deliver on its promise.

Backed by leading investors (Goldman Sachs, Hedosophia, NEA, Valar, 8VC) and trusted by major carriers, Bestow is powered by a team that moves with precision, purpose, and heart. If you want to help reimagine a centuries-old industry with lasting impact, join us.

Bestow offers flexible remote/hybrid work, meaningful benefits, equity, and substantial growth opportunities.

Bestow participates in the E-Verify Program.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We are hiring a Senior Quality Engineer who will serve as a practice lead and behavioral architect for how software is defined, validated, and understood across the organization — while remaining a hands-on, technically credible contributor to our Quality Engineering and automation efforts.

This role goes far beyond writing tests.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You will champion and institutionalize practices such as Definition of Ready, Example Mapping, Specification by Example, and Spec-Driven Development — embedding clarity, shared understanding, and testability into the earliest stages of the Software Development Lifecycle.

At the same time, you will actively contribute to API and UI automation disciplines, ensuring that structured specifications translate directly into robust, scalable validation artifacts.

Initially embedded within a product team, you will dogfood and refine these practices, then scale them across the engineering organization using a teach-the-teachers model.

You will partner closely with Engineering, Product, Technical Program Management, Customer Success, and the Senior Manager of Quality Engineering to establish foundational behaviors that enable long-term quality maturity, automation excellence, regulatory traceability, and future AI-enablement.

  • Practice Leadership & Behavioral Change (Primary Focus – ~70%)

    • Lead and facilitate Definition of Ready (DoR) workshops.

    • Conduct Example Mapping and Specification by Example sessions.

    • Convert ambiguous requirements into structured, testable specifications.

    • Establish shared vocabulary and ubiquitous language across teams.

    • Create reusable facilitation templates, examples, and playbooks.

    • Coach Product Managers and Engineers on behavior-focused acceptance criteria.

    • Embed Spec-Driven Development (SSD) practices within backlog refinement workflows.

    • Develop a scalable teach-the-teachers adoption model.

    • Reduce ambiguity-driven rework through measurable improvements in clarity.

  • Automation & Technical Quality Contribution (~30%)

    • Design and implement API test strategies aligned to structured specifications.

    • Contribute to RESTful API testing using contract validation and schema enforcement.

    • Partner in test strategy to ensure automation reflects business behaviors and documented details.

    • Translate Example Mapping and Specification by Example artifacts directly into automated validation.

    • Participate in framework evolution with SDETs (test architecture, fixtures, utilities).

    • Improve test data management and environment stability practices.

    • Ensure requirements-to-test traceability (RTM) is maintained and auditable.

    • Contribute to CI/CD quality gates and validation pipelines.

    • Analyze test execution results and improve failure diagnosis workflows.

    • Advocate for deterministic, parallelizable, locally executable tests.

  • Organizational Scaling & Enablement

    • Scale Definition of Ready (DoR) and specification practices beyond the initial embedded team.

    • Train Quality Engineers and SDETs to facilitate structured refinement sessions.

    • Align specification clarity with automation and reporting maturity.

    • Contribute to the corresponding Definition of Done (DoD) improvement efforts.

    • Improve cross-functional documentation clarity, benefiting Customer Success.

    • Partner in advancing reporting and traceability capabilities over time.

WHO YOU ARE

  • 6+ years of progressive experience in Quality Engineering roles.

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating structured requirements practices (DoR, Example Mapping, BDD, or Specification by Example).

  • Strong API testing expertise (REST, schema validation, contract testing).

  • Proficient in UI automation disciplines.

  • Experience contributing to test framework architecture or shared utilities.

  • Clear understanding of CI/CD validation workflows.

  • Experience maintaining requirements-to-test traceability.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Coaching and facilitation expertise.

  • Ability to influence without formal authority.

  • Systems-thinking mindset.

  • History of progressively expanded responsibility.

Competencies/Skills

  • API Testing Strategy & Automation Design

  • Structured Requirements Facilitation

  • Cross-Functional Coaching & Influence

  • Requirements Traceability & Validation Mapping

  • CI/CD & Deterministic Test Design

  • Systems Thinking & Progressive Leadership
