As a Senior Designer on the Design Systems team at Toyota Connected North America, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the design system that powers digital experiences across Toyota. Our design system empowers product teams to build cohesive, high quality, and accessible automotive experiences used by millions of customers worldwide.

You will work with a global, centralized team of designers and engineers to expand and evolve Toyota's design system to meet ever expanding needs of the organization. You will be responsible for leading design system initiatives, including the creation and maintenance of design tokens, components, templates, documentation and resources related to the design system. You will partner closely with customers and researchers to drive strategic decisions, ensuring that design solutions are aligned with user needs and business goals. You will work effectively at a macro and micro level, considering how design will scale across products and platforms, while also focusing on the design details that align with Toyota's high standards of quality, safety and reliability. 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Work closely with a global team of designers, product managers, software developers, and researchers providing design system support to meet the needs of internal teams and end users. 
  • Write clear, comprehensive documentation and guidelines to help designers and developers apply system components effectively. 
  • Continuously improve and evolve the design system based on user feedback, technology advancements, and product updates. 
  • Help mature product strategy with key product team leads 
  • Be a champion for the design system, educating teams on its benefits and best practices through presentations, workshops, and ongoing communication. 
  • Collaborate with organizational team (scrum) to prioritize and plan design activities, estimate effort and timelines, and manage deliverables within given constraints 
  • Mentor designers and foster systems thinking across the organization. 
  • Help grow the design system and product design teams by participating in portfolio reviews and interviews. 
  • Begin to drive roadmaps and planning conversations 
  • Be an advocate for systems thinking to help foster alignment across teams and disciplines. 
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusive design principles are incorporated into the design process 
  • Create reusable and flexible design tokens, components, patterns, tools and component libraries to ensure consistency and efficiency using experience 
  • Update or replace legacy components to align with system guidelines and modern standards. 
  • Experiment and prototype rapidly to validate design concepts. 

 

Qualifications:  

  • 5+ years of experience working as a UX/Product Designer  
  • 2+ years working within a design systems team 
  • Experience working in Figma or similar tools, with a solid understanding of systems-specific features such as variables, variants/component properties, branching and publishing. 
  • Experience in design prototyping 
  • Ability to distill complicated problems into simple and elegant solutions 
  • Understand technical limitations and liberties behind your decisions and can communicate those clearly to your product team 
  • Self-organized, with a strong attention to detail, able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines 
  • Ability to clearly express the reasoning behind your UX and visual design decisions 
  • Ability to develop healthy working relationships and collaborate with peers and leaders 
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on commitments 
  • Demonstrated experience juggling multiple tasks and adapting to shifting priorities 
  • Strong conflict resolution skills with the ability to mediate and foster positive outcomes 
  • Exhibits integrity and high standards in work quality

Location: 

This position is based in Plano, Texas. Toyota Connected encourages all employees to live within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned work location for Hybrid work.
