Who we are:

Electra is reinventing iron production to tackle the nearly 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions produced from iron and steelmaking. Its patented process uses chemistry and renewable energy to transform a variety of grades of iron ore into environmentally responsible pure iron at scale. By maximizing the value of Earth’s resources and minimizing our environmental footprint and carbon emissions, Electra is forging a green future from the ground up. With a collaborative culture and passion for disrupting the status quo, careers at Electra offer challengereward, and the opportunity to bring to market solutions that dramatically improve the health of the planet.

What you will do:

As a Senior Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and maintaining process safety management systems for our cutting-edge high-purity iron production facilities. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify, assess, and mitigate potential hazards associated with our electrowinning and electroplating processes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive PSM programs tailored to Electra’s unique processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
  • Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies, including HAZOPs and LOPAs, for new and existing processes in electrowinning and electroplating
  • Manage the site PHA schedule and oversee the implementation of recommendations
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate identified hazards throughout the scaling process, from pilot to demonstration to large-scale plant operations
  • Perform consequence analysis studies to better understand potential process incidents and their impacts, particularly related to electrochemical processes and handling of electrolytes
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and other relevant regulations in the metal production industry
  • Develop and maintain process safety documentation, including process technology packages, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safe operating limits (SOLs) for electrowinning and electroplating processes
  • Identify process safety improvement opportunities and make recommendations for new tools and work process enhancements in high-purity iron production
  • Lead process related Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for incidents and near-misses
  • Develop and deliver process safety training programs for employees at all levels of the organization, focusing on the unique aspects of electrowinning and electroplating processes
  • Communicate critical performance information related to PSM to management and stakeholders
  • Read, understand, and comply with all workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices, and company policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

What we need you to bring to the team:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or related
  • 8+ years of industry experience in process safety management, preferably in electrochemistry or hydrometallurgy, or related metal production industries (excludes internships, co-ops, and other school projects) OR 6+ years of industry experience in process safety management, preferably in electrochemistry or hydrometallurgy, or related metal production industries with a related master’s degree (excludes internships, co-ops, and other school projects)
  • Strong knowledge of PSM principles, risk assessment methodologies, and relevant regulations in metal production
  • Experience with scaling processes from pilot to demonstration to large-scale plant operations
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency with, or ability to quickly learn, Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint

What we want you to bring to the team:

  • Master's degree in chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or related
  • 9+ years of industry experience in process safety management, preferably in electrowinning, electroplating, or related metal production industries (excludes internships, co-ops, and other school projects)
  • Certification as a Process Safety Professional (CCPSC) or similar
  • Familiarity with electrowinning and electroplating processes used in high-purity iron production
  • Experience with Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes
  • Proficiency in process safety software tools and risk assessment techniques
  • Knowledge of handling and safety protocols for electrolytes and metal-bearing solutions

Compensation:

  • The anticipated starting pay range for this position is $117,000 - $147,000 annually and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.
