BAE Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer.
At BAE Systems, we deliver a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology solutions and customer support services. If you are an individual that enjoys an Agile hardware development team environment and is interested in a variety of challenges across a variety of high-reliability products, then we are interested in hearing from you!
The individual selected for this position will be a proven leader with diverse technical capabilities and demonstrated "hands-on" mechanical engineering expertise. This role supports new business capture by defining mechanical concepts and architectures, under a quick and agile process, to meet multiple customer requirements, and proposal inputs (cost and technical justification). When not supporting proposal activity, will lead mechanical engineering teams in design, development, integration/test, and production of complex and dynamic military systems as well as provide SME support for design, integration, manufacturing and testing of hardware and subsystems for Electronic Warfare products across the business. The individual must be a self-starter with Agile hardware development experience working with integrated military avionics/electronic hardware and supporting test equipment.
The selected candidate will be expected to execute both individually and in small to large, yet diverse, Agile hardware team environments throughout all phases of the product life cycle. This includes concept development, detail design, qualification, manufacturing transition, and production support. The engineer will be responsible for developing innovative and robust hardware solutions to meet demanding customer requirements and will leverage their mechanical engineering expertise to perform detailed design and analyses. Day to day, activities may include generating 3D solid models, drawings, and documentation utilizing GD&T principles; performing tolerance analyses to assure fit & function; performing thermal, structural/stress, and modal/vibration analyses; assessing designs against environmental requirements; as well as generating prototypes and conducting test and verification efforts.
With a product focus, the individual will actively partner with other engineering disciplines and operations personnel to develop solutions that adhere to DTUPC, DFT, and DFM requirements. Additionally, the engineer will support resolution of technical issues that are discovered during manufacture and test of deliverable hardware. This may include evaluating and troubleshooting mechanical faults and issues, assessing test failures for root cause, identifying disposition/corrective actions, as well as designing test equipment to ensure the performance and integrity of manufactured products.
The selected mechanical engineer is expected to have applicable experience in the following areas:

  • Agile hardware development, risk-reduction prototyping, and requirements-driven design and verification
  • Knowledge of engineering development processes for aero/defense industry
  • The candidate should possess an understanding in the application of heat transfer principles, strength of materials, materials selection, design for vibration environments and the ability to apply those principles to unique mechanical design challenges.
  • Design, development, analysis and testing of electromechanical architectures, hardware and systems
  • Demonstrated experience in Product/Factory Support of DoD military electronics/avionics equipment
  • State-of-the-art mechanical engineering design/analysis and development tools
  • Familiarity with design, analysis and manufacturing standards associated with complex multilayer rigid and rigid-flex CCAs
  • Strong "hands-on" laboratory experience with instrumentation, equipment, and processes
  • MIL specs & standards, industry standards including ASTM, SAE, DO
  • Engineering documentation and presentations
  • Technical leadership of mechanical / hardware teams in executing engineering development efforts

The ideal candidate will thrive in a learning environment that encourages leadership and technical growth.
