About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Plant Process Control Engineer to join our team in the first of its kind renewable SAF production plant. This position plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and optimizing process control strategies to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process control systems, process safety, and plant operations, with demonstrated leadership in managing automation projects and mentoring others.
Responsibilities
Execute best-in-class safety, process safety, and environmental performance in the design, construction, startup, and continued operation of our facility. Through mentoring/direction of Senior Process Engineering staff, this individual will:
- Develop into the process controls subject matter expert (SME) for the FPF team. Provide engineering expertise for optimization and troubleshooting issues for all processes including catalytic reactions, distillation, heat transfer, purification, etc.
- Develop, configure, and optimize process control strategies (simple and complex loops), and author control narratives aligned with operational and safety standards.
- Promote process safety management (PSM) by leading Management of Change (MOC) activities, Root Cause Analyses (RCA), and continuous improvement initiatives
- Manage and maintain control system hardware, firmware, and backups; ensure adequate strategic spare parts inventory for reliability
- Plan, execute, and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning, and start-ups of new or modified process units
- Troubleshoot and optimize process performance, control loops, and instrumentation across plant operations
- Work with Allen Bradley ControlLogix, FactoryTalk View ME/SE, AssetCentre, and PlantPAx systems; program using Functional Blocks, Ladder Logic, and Structured Text
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (operations, maintenance, process, electrical, contractors) to deliver high-quality automation solutions on time and within budget
- Apply fundamental process knowledge—including reaction chemistry, distillation, heat transfer, and separation processes—to design effective control strategies
- Perform instrument sizing and selection, and review P&IDs, PFDs, and electrical drawings for design accuracy and troubleshooting
- Provide mentoring and coaching to operators and junior engineers to enhance control system understanding and operational performance
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or other applicable technical degrees
- 5+ years of industrial experience as a control engineer in chemical, petroleum refining/petrochemical, or other closely related industry
- Proficiency with Allen Bradley platforms and FactoryTalk software suite
- Strong understanding of process safety, control system lifecycle management, and project execution
- Demonstrated ability to lead investigations, implement improvements, and communicate technical information effectively (written and verbal).
- Familiarity with PlantPAx architectures, advanced process control (APC), and cybersecurity best practices is preferred
- Hands-on experience with VFDs, network infrastructure, and instrument calibration preferred
- Background in control system obsolescence management and automation reliability strategies preferred
- Experience in operation and troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems. Demonstrated experience with DCS and/or PLC systems
- Familiarity with control loop tuning, data historians, and interface with PLCs
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills including proficiency with both written and verbal technical communication
- Ability to work in a cross-functional, agile work environment
- Able to support a 24x7 chemical processing plant through design, construction, commissioning, and startup
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future
