Senior Network Engineer - Wireless & Physical Security

A dependable network gives people the confidence to get on with their work. At Modern IT, you will turn client needs into carefully implemented infrastructure—from network equipment and wireless coverage to internet connectivity, cameras, and physical access systems.

You will develop designs for an architect’s approval, then own implementation, testing, and handoff. You will work with clients, colleagues, providers, and subcontractors to deliver environments that perform reliably and are straightforward to support.

Home base: La Verne, California, with regular client-site work throughout Southern California and occasional visits to other states. For this search, we are focusing on applicants who are already based in Southern California and can reliably work at those locations. Overnight travel is currently expected approximately once every one to three months and may increase as project demand grows. Modern IT is unable to provide employment visa sponsorship for this role, now or in the future.

Reports to: Director of Professional Services.

Employment: Full-time. Generally 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with scheduling around after-hours cutovers. On-call is currently no more than one weekend per month.

Network infrastructure: Develop designs for architect approval and implement the approved solution. Own configuration, rack organization, power, patching, labeling, testing, and documentation. Escalate material design changes for approval.

Wireless: Assess client needs and site conditions, develop designs, and validate coverage, capacity, roaming, security, and performance against how people use the space.

ISP delivery: Implement standardized installations, upgrades, and migrations handed over by the vCIO, who develops the plan with telecom brokers. Coordinate provider readiness, site dependencies, cutover, validation, and handoff. Keep delivery records accurate to support the commercial process.

Cameras and connected security: Develop and implement architect-approved UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, environmental sensor, and related IoT solutions. Validate agreed coverage, recording, permissions, connectivity, supported integrations, and failure behavior. Coordinate specialist dependencies.

Subcontractor Management: Set clear scope and acceptance criteria, inspect work, and drive deficiencies to resolution. You can reject work that falls short of agreed standards; explain the gap respectfully and establish a practical correction plan that protects outcomes and relationships.

Operational handoff: Deliver accurate as-built records, configuration documentation, test results, and a clear support handoff. Participate in complex escalations when needed and bring root-cause learning into future implementations.

Implementations pass agreed acceptance testing and meet approved designs. Material deficiencies are resolved before handoff. Clients understand the change, support teams can maintain it, and sound engineering reduces avoidable disruption.

As our cabling and connected-infrastructure work grows, you will help develop a repeatable delivery capability: clear scopes, dependable subcontractor relationships, quality standards, and a practical plan for expanding what Modern IT can deliver. You will help colleagues apply these standards and build their delivery skills. C-7 licensing or qualifying-individual experience is a strong advantage.

You bring hands-on experience with:

• Network implementation and troubleshooting across routing, switching, firewalls, segmentation, and device connectivity, including UniFi and Meraki environments.
• Wireless site surveys, design, deployment, and performance validation.
• UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, IoT, and physical-security implementations.
• ISP installations and migrations, including provider coordination, cutover planning, validation, and handoff.
• Subcontractor coordination, quality inspection, and constructive resolution of deficient work.
• C-7 licensing or qualifying-individual experience is preferred, not required to apply.
• Applying AI to engineering processes, such as test plans, documentation, and repeatable workflows. You validate technical outputs, protect client information, and remain responsible for the result.

You can explain work you personally delivered: the design, approval process, implementation choices, testing, and handoff. You communicate clearly with clients and colleagues, work within architect-approved designs, and document systems so others can support them.

Base salary: $150,000–$180,000 annually, based on relevant experience and demonstrated capabilities.

You may be eligible to participate in Modern IT’s profit-sharing plan after six months of employment, subject to plan terms. Payouts are not guaranteed.

A company vehicle is available for work-related travel. Travel and vehicle expenses are handled under Modern IT’s policy in accordance with applicable IRS rules.
