Your role at a glance
The Senior Mechanical Solutions Engineer is a core Subject Matter Expert (SME) within Global Solutions Engineering, providing mechanical engineering technical depth to the broader Solutions Engineering organization primarily in EMEA, but also supporting India, APAC, and the Americas. The role translates hyperscale and neocloud/enterprise customer requirements into practical, scalable, and commercially viable data center mechanical solutions, with particular emphasis on high-density and liquid-cooled deployments. This individual contributor will develop mechanical concepts through approximately 30% schematic design and produce the drawings, calculations, narratives, and scope definition required for Design Management and Construction teams to price and execute customer fit-out work. Based in the UK, Germany or the Netherlands the engineer will operate as a global resource and might occasionally participate in customer and internal meetings across multiple time zones.
This position will also provide pre-sales technical support to the Global NTT GDC Sales team in Europe. You will help prospective customers and partners understand our building systems, explaining the technical features and serving as the subject matter expert on all data center products, services, and solutions to help the Sales team close business deals. The Global Solutions Engineer will be responsible for presenting solutions, generating quotes, and leading tours of the NTT GDC facilities in Europe.
What we are looking for
As the Senior Mechanical Solutions Engineer, you will be the mechanical engineering SME within our Global Solutions Engineering team, developing innovative and scalable data center solutions for hyperscale, cloud and enterprise customers. You'll translate complex technical and business requirements into practical, commercially viable designs, with a particular focus on high-density and liquid-cooled environments.
Working closely with customers, sales teams and project delivery stakeholders, you'll support the full pre-sales lifecycle, from early-stage concept development through to solution presentation and customer engagement. You'll provide expert technical guidance, help shape winning solutions, and act as a trusted advisor on mechanical infrastructure, products and services across our global data center platform.
Based in the UK, Germany or the Netherlands, you'll be part of a globally connected engineering team, collaborating with colleagues and customers across EMEA, APAC and the Americas. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to contribute to some of the world's most advanced data center projects, with occasional travel primarily across EMEA and, where required, internationally.
What we will you do?
- Serve as the EMEA Mechanical SME and escalation point for the Global Solutions Engineering organization, supporting Solutions Engineers with technical interpretation, solution development, customer discussions, and technical risk identification
- Lead mechanical solutioning for hyperscale, AI/HPC, and enterprise opportunities, with strong emphasis on liquid cooling, high-density deployments, and fit-out of both new and existing data center capacity
- Translate customer RFP, SOQ, CDE, technical schedules, and design criteria into mechanical concepts that align customer requirements with NTT Data GDC standards, available site infrastructure, schedule, and commercial objectives
- Develop mechanical design concepts through approximately 30% schematic design, including P&IDs / flow diagrams, major equipment layouts, piping concepts, equipment connection points, system zoning, design criteria, sequence-of-operation intent, and supporting markups
- Prepare sufficiently detailed schematic packages and technical scope information for Construction / Preconstruction teams to establish fit-out pricing, identify Non-Recurring Costs (NRC), and assess schedule impacts and delivery risks
- Perform or validate engineering calculations including cooling load, water flow, heat exchanger duty, pressure drop, pump head, pipe sizing, approach temperatures, redundancy / failover capacity, and system operating envelopes
- Define interfaces between customer liquid-cooling systems and base-building mechanical infrastructure, including supply / return temperatures, water quality, filtration, treatment, controls, leak detection, redundancy, commissioning, and operational requirements
- Participate directly in customer workshops, technical deep-dives, RFP clarifications, site visits, and executive / technical presentations; communicate complex mechanical topics clearly to both technical and non-discipline audiences
- Identify solution risks, constraints, assumptions, and early trade-offs; clearly communicate impacts to capacity, resiliency, maintainability, cost, schedule, and operational performance
- Support projects and customer opportunities globally; maintain flexibility to join meetings across EMEA, APAC and Americas business hours when required.
- Engage and often lead Solutions discussions with prospects, customers, and partners (either in person or via conference calls) with Account Executives when a technical resource is needed
What are we looking for?
- Expert-level understanding of data center mechanical infrastructure and thermodynamic / hydraulic principles, including chilled-water systems, condenser-water systems, cooling towers, dry / adiabatic coolers, heat exchangers, pumps, piping, valves, water treatment, air-handling systems, CRAH/CRAC equipment, and heat-rejection systems
- Deep practical expertise in liquid cooling for high-density compute, including direct-to-chip cooling, CDUs, technology cooling system / facility water system interfaces, secondary fluid networks, rack manifolds, coolant distribution, heat exchangers, leak detection, water quality / chemistry, controls, and commissioning considerations
- Ability to produce and check engineering calculations for fluid flow, pressure loss, pump head / NPSH, heat transfer, approach temperature, equipment capacity, diversity, failover, and system efficiency
- Familiarity with BMS / controls architecture, instrumentation, valve and actuator strategies, sequence-of-operation development, alarming, trending, and integration of customer cooling equipment with base-building controls
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to distinguish design intent from construction detail, enabling rapid solution development while producing enough definition for reliable pricing and scope establishment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex engineering issues to Sales, customers, senior leaders, and other non-discipline stakeholders
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline required; master’s degree is a plus.
- Strong mechanical engineering experience gained within mission-critical facilities, hyperscale data centres, high-density computing environments, or other complex infrastructure environments
- Experience working for a hyperscaler, data center operator, engineering consultant, OEM, or major mission-critical contractor is highly desirable
- Professional Engineer / Chartered Engineer registration is desirable but not required where the role does not serve as Engineer of Record (EoR)
