Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Mechanical R&D Engineer to provide technical leadership for the development and integration of Boston Scientific’s Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) console within the Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Therapies (ICVT) division. This role is responsible for performing mechanical engineering activities across a complex medical device system consisting of capital equipment, laser and optical subsystems, and electromechanical assemblies. These activities include generating mechanical design solutions, performing engineering analysis and root cause investigations, defining and completing reliability testing, and supporting manufacturing transfer efforts. In this role, you will collaborate closely with systems, sustaining, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.

 

Work model, sponsorship, relocation:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a hybrid work model requiring employees to be in our local office in Arbor Lakes (Maple Grove) or Arden Hills, Minnesota at least three days per week. Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position at this time. 

 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Support the mechanical aspects of the design and commercialization of complex medical device systems, subsystems, assemblies, and components.
  • Generate mechanical designs and solutions using CAD tools (SolidWorks) and engineering best practices.
  • Perform engineering analyses including tolerance stack analysis, statistical analysis, and reliability assessments to ensure product performance and robustness.
  • Define and execute mechanical characterization strategies to support system-level requirements and product performance objectives.
  • Support design-for-manufacturability (DFM), design-for-assembly (DFA), design-for-serviceability, and design-for-reliability activities.
  • Support manufacturing transfer activities and sustained production efforts while ensuring robust product performance and yields.
  • Partner with suppliers and external partners to ensure successful supply of critical components and assemblies.
  • Lead root cause investigations, risk assessments, and corrective actions related to product design, manufacturing issues, and field performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts focused on product performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost optimization.
  • Build strong relationships across cross-functional and multi-site teams to ensure alignment on technical objectives, schedules, and program deliverables.
  • Travel up to 15% to support development activities, supplier interactions, and cross-site collaboration.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline
  • 6+ years of engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 4+ years with a Master’s degree; or 2+ years with a PhD
  • Experience developing complex medical devices, electromechanical systems, or highly regulated products. 
  • Strong knowledge in mechanical design, tolerance analysis, materials selection, and assembly design.
  • Proficiency with CAD systems such as SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical design software.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical leadership skills.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with laser energy delivery systems or optomechanical design.
  • Experience developing capital medical equipment.
  • Experience working within Design Controls and Quality Management Systems compliant with FDA regulations and ISO 13485.
