PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Our Senior Laboratory Planner will lead laboratory planning for medium- to large-scale projects as part of an integrated, highly collaborative team of architects, planners, designers, and engineers. This individual will advise project teams across offices and market sectors, providing programming and planning expertise for a broad range of laboratory environments, including STEM teaching laboratories, life and physical sciences, engineering, computer science, cleanrooms, vivaria, technical laboratories, and related support spaces. The Senior Laboratory Planner will also partner with the National Laboratory Planning Leader to advance thought leadership, establish planning standards and best practices, and support strategic project pursuits.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Meet with user groups to determine technical requirements of proposed laboratory spaces
  • Prepare written program documents as required for sign-off by user groups and owners
  • Develop alternative design proposals based on user requirements. 
  • Coordinate project team members or key areas of project development as assigned to design and document best-of-class laboratory facilities
  • Conduct and document required code research for laboratory portions of projects in coordination with Technical Architect and Design Leader
  • Collaborate as required for effective project workflows with other disciplines or outside consultants
  • Attend project meetings as necessary
  • Document interpretation and submittal reviews during bidding and construction administration as directed by and in conjunction with Project Architect.
  • Work with other staff across HED’s national offices to help coordinate efforts towards advancing the world of laboratory facilities
  • Develop presentation stories and related graphics as part of project team pursuits
  • Participate and attend national conferences that advance HED’s reputation as thought leaders in the programming, planning, and design of science laboratories
  • When needed, assemble and document science related equipment and their requirements for each project
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the National Laboratory Planning Leader or by the Principal in Charge

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or related field required
  • Professional license or license track candidates preferred
  • Minimum ten years of experience in similar role required
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office software and Autodesk Revit require
  • Knowledge of other 2D and 3D software preferred
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and utility requirements
  • Strong written, verbal communication skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to facilitate with laboratory users, research teams and related client team members
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic and collaborative
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations
  • Active participation in professional organizations a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Capable of traveling to and from project sites for attending client, project and construction meetings 
  • Ability to access existing and new project sites for observation, investigation and evaluation purposes
  • Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities

Skills Required
