The Role:

TECHNOLOGY | SR INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER (PORTLAND)

Reports To: Sr Technology Director

Primary Job Description

Our interactive developers are problem solvers and creative coders at heart. They collaborate with UX strategists, designers, audio-visual consultants, and fellow developers in the creation of digitally augmented experiences within the built environment. A developer at Downstream is asked to take leading-edge technology and formulate innovative ideas for creating tailor-made solutions for our multi-national clients. Interactive Developers are responsible for interpreting the clients’ technical requirements, and working across disciplines to craft solutions that meet the clients’ needs. Excellent communications skills, both with clients and internal staff, are vital for the success of this position.

With Downstream, there is excellent growth opportunity for creative coders who are responsible for realizing the concepts created by the strategy, creative, and technology teams. In this role, you will be tasked with establishing Downstream’s position as an industry leader by creating immersive interactive environments and experiences. You will have the opportunity to expand your interests in stacks ranging from hardware, to desktop, to game engine frameworks and much more.


Success will be measured in a variety of areas including but not limited to:

· Collaborative integration with design, development, and project management teams

· Contribution to scope and features-list definition processes

· Ability to accurately assess the level of effort on assigned development tasks to influence development schedules and budgets

· Innovative and curiosity-driven approach to unique project challenges

· Deliver assigned projects on time and to the quality standards required

· Ability to turn approved design into code that performs daily in permanent, built-environment projects

Responsibilities include:

· Leading front-end development for client and internal projects

· Pushing innovation through experimentation with new and established frameworks

· Following and helping to further define best coding practices for development team

· Mentoring junior developers on day-to-day development

· Driving project review processes with peer developers and design team

· Providing clear documentation on project build and deployment dependencies

· Presenting progress to clients during design production and system commissioning/training

· Consistent integration with agency toolset for development projects (Jira, GitHub, Teams, Figma)

· Active participation in development team stand-up and code-review meetings

· Following and enforcing high standards for project usability and aesthetic excellence

· Providing support for existing clients and applications

Requirements/Qualifications:

· 6+ years working with Touchdesigner

· Version control with Git/GitHub

· Experience developing for touch-based and other natural user interfaces

· Ability to both rapidly prototype and create production-level code

· A creative, curious, innovative mind

We Also Really Like:

· Experience with C++ creative coding toolkits Cinder and/or open Frameworks

· Development for graphics pipeline with OpenGL

· Comfort with a scripting language (PowerShell, Python, Ruby, Lua)

· Experience in Unity

· Physical Computing & microcontroller skills (Arduino, Raspberry Pi)

· Experience with 3D-depth sensing cameras

· Experience with generative art and audio

· Experience commissioning software within complex audio-visual environments

· Experience in Processing / Ventuz

· Experience with Art-Net and/or DMX lighting control

· Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, and XD)

· A passion to learn and adapt
