Job Summary


This Senior Financial Accountant - Tribal government is the lead position within the Tribe’s Accounting Department. S/he is actively involved in accounting functions, including accounts payable, payroll, and accounts receivable, as well as budgeting and audit functions. S/he assists with the annual budget development process and the execution and ongoing monitoring of the budgets; assists with monthly and year-end closing processes and the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements and reports. Performs accounting activities and reporting under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and other federal rules and regulations.



Representative Job Duties:

  1. Supervises, compiles, and analyzes financial information and bank statements to prepare journal entries for general ledger accounts, documents business transactions, and maintains an accurate payable function.

  2. Monitors all Tribal Bank Accounts for wire transfer activity, prepares journal entries for wire transfer activity to be posted to the general ledger.

  3. Assists in the budgetary variance analysis, keeps budgets updated, and assists departments in monitoring program budgets and activities. 

  4. Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, and prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports to summarize and interpret current and projected company financial position for other managers.

  5. Provide fiscal information and assistance to Directors, Supervisors, and staff.

  6. Enters the approved budgets in the Budget Module of the Fund Accounting system.

  7. Assist and support the Grants and Contracts Specialist with financial reporting and preparing the Federal Form SF 425 to report grants’ financial status.

  8. Assist in preparing the monthly grants and contracts receivable and deferred revenue schedule. 

  9. Monitor accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll systems and related Procedures.

  10. Prepare reports and schedules to be used to prepare audited financial statements.

  11. Collects appropriate data and prepares federal, state, and local reports and tax returns.

  12. Maintain fixed assets and infrastructure accounting and inventory records.

  13. Review accounting functions and recommend best practices for operational workflow.

  14. Ensure compliance with all Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) and Tribal Internal Control Standards (TICS).

  15. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of Four (4) years of previous accounting and financial analysis experience in government, including, municipal, counties, and cities.

  2. A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. A Master of Business Administration (MBA), and certifications like CPA, CMA, or CFA can distinguish candidates.

  3. Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills in an active office environment.

  4. Highly proficient in all Microsoft Office applications (must be comfortable with advanced-level applications in Excel and Access plus data query tools).

  5. Experience with Abila MIP Fund Accounting software is preferred.

  6. The selected candidate must complete a pre-employment drug screen test and a complete background investigation, including relevant criminal history, prior to employment.

Skills Required

  • Minimum of four (4) years accounting and financial analysis experience in government (municipal, counties, cities).
