Job Description
naThe Senior Equity Trader plays a critical role in executing Equity & FX trades efficiently and effectively across portfolios, supporting optimal investment outcomes for clients.Working closely with Portfolio Managers, Portfolio Implementation, and Risk teams, this role ensures that investment decisions are translated into high-quality trade execution, while managing market impact, liquidity, and transaction costs. The role also contributes to strengthening trading capabilities, processes, and systems in a dynamic and evolving investment environment.
What You’ll Be Trusted With
Trade Execution and Market Interaction
- Execute local and global equity & fx trades in line with portfolio manager instructions, mandates, and best execution principles.
- Manage order flow across multiple portfolios, ensuring efficient execution while minimising market impact and transaction costs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and counterparties to support optimal execution outcomes.
Market Insight and Trade Strategy
- Provide real-time market colour, liquidity insights, and trade ideas to portfolio managers.
- Contribute to the development of trading strategies, including block trades, programme trades, and liquidity sourcing.
- Monitor market developments, pricing trends, and trading conditions to inform execution decisions.
Risk Management and Governance
- Ensure adherence to mandates, compliance requirements, and internal trading policies.
- Monitor pre- and post-trade risks, including exposure limits, liquidity constraints, and settlement considerations.
- Maintain strong controls and audit trails across all trading activity.
Collaboration and Portfolio Support
- Work closely with Portfolio Managers and Portfolio Implementation teams to align execution with investment strategy and portfolio objectives.
- Partner with Risk, Operations, and Compliance teams to ensure smooth trade lifecycle management.
- Contribute to a disciplined and transparent trading environment.
Systems, Process and Continuous Improvement
- Support the effective use and optimisation of trading platforms (e.g. CRIMS or equivalent OMS).
- Identify opportunities to improve trading efficiency, automation, and execution quality.
- Contribute to trading analytics and transaction cost analysis (TCA) initiatives.
Who you are
You are an experienced and disciplined Equity Trader who thrives in a fast-paced investment environment and takes pride in delivering high-quality execution outcomes.
You bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Finance, Investment Management, Economics, or a related field. Preference will be given to Post-Grad/CFA candidates.
- Completed JSE Registered Persons Exams
- 5–10 years’ experience in Equity Trading within an asset management or institutional investment environment.
- Strong understanding of equity markets, market microstructure, and trading strategies across local and global markets.
- Proven experience executing trades across multiple portfolios and managing complex order flows.
- Knowledge of trading systems and order management platforms (e.g. Charles River, Bloomberg AIM or similar).
- Solid understanding of regulatory, compliance, and best execution requirements.
- Experience with transaction cost analysis (TCA) and performance measurement is advantageous.
