Engineering Manager

Job Title:  Engineering Manager, Data (Canada)

Position Overview: Atreides is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Ingestion and Platform Engineering efforts, building and operating the systems that transform large, complex multi-modal datasets into reliable, information-rich geospatial data subscriptions. You’ll manage and grow a high-performing team of data and platform engineers, drive execution through ambiguity, and partner cross-functionally to deliver low-latency processing, strong reliability, and scalable cloud infrastructure. This role also owns cloud cost and engineering KPI discipline—balancing performance, resiliency, and spend while improving the platform’s throughput, quality, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities: 

• Lead, mentor, and coach data and platform engineers, providing technical guidance and career development.  

• Maintain a steady, composed approach under pressure, guiding teams through ambiguity and technical complexity while staying focused on mission-critical outcomes. 

• Build data processing systems to deliver actionable insights to end-users. Optimize data flows and streaming analytics to ensure fast, low-latency decision-making capabilities. 

• Cloud & Distributed Systems: Work with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) to deploy and scale big data systems. Utilize containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-native services to ensure flexible and scalable platform infrastructure. 

• Cloud Cost Management & KPIs  

• Partner with Infrastructure and Finance to manage cloud costs across AWS/Azure/GCP, balancing performance, scalability, and spend.  

• Implement and govern cost monitoring, budget controls, and rightsizing strategies for compute, storage, and networking.  

• Define, track, and socialize engineering KPIs (e.g., reliability, throughput, defect rates, incident metrics) to drive transparency and continuous improvement. 

Required Qualifications: 

• Proven experience managing remote teams, building career ladders, setting and tracking measurable goals, and creating strong engineering culture across multiple teams. 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to drive clarity on complex technical topics and have direct conversations when needed. 

• Willingness to support occasional travel and after-hours work when critical technical issues arise. 

• Experience building and running platform capabilities used by multiple teams (e.g., ingestion frameworks, SDKs, workflow/orchestration, data contracts, schemas, observability, self-serve tooling). 

• Strong foundation in distributed systems and production operations: scalability, backpressure, idempotency, retries, ordering, data consistency, and failure modes. 

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing and developing engineers. 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Knowledge or experience in visualizing remote sensing, GIS, satellite ground stations, satellite communication systems, RF communication links, and electrical/mechanical systems. 

• Experience leading ingestion at high volume / high variability (e.g., many sources, frequent schema changes, messy upstream systems) and building patterns to scale integrations. 

• Experience with developer productivity investments: CI/CD, golden paths, scaffolding, local dev environments, test data strategies, and runtime debugging tools.
