Senior Robotic System Application Engineer

The Dexterous AI Group (DAG) is an R&D team working toward robots with human-level dexterity by combining sensing, robot learning, and control. We seek a Senior Robotic System Application Engineer to turn frontier technologies into working demonstrators, with an emphasis on AI-enabled robotic systems using arms and sensor-equipped hands. You will also develop sensor-level demonstrations and support customer presentations, trade shows, and evaluations.

Why this role matters

Your demonstrators will show how emerging sensing and AI technologies perform individually and in complete robotic systems. Customer discussions and evaluations will provide evidence of application relevance, operating constraints, and integration challenges to inform the team’s research and future demonstrations.

Responsibilities
  • Develop research-led AI demonstrators using robot arms and sensor-equipped hands, alongside sensor-level demonstrations. Implement application software and resolve mechanical, electrical, and software integration issues.
  • Contribute to demonstrator inception and planning with AI, research, software, and hardware colleagues. Translate the group’s research objectives into demonstration concepts, system requirements, success criteria, and build plans.
  • Work with AI engineers and researchers to integrate and run models, prepare test scenarios, and assess robot behavior. Document configurations, demonstrated performance, and known limitations.
  • Install and configure sensors on demonstration systems, verify data quality, and explain their operating principles, outputs, and practical limitations in the context of the application.
  • Maintain reliable demos through regression checks, configuration records, and setup and recovery procedures. Apply robot safety practices and prepare systems for repeated demonstrations and evaluations.
  • Deliver customer demonstrations and support trade shows, including setup, operation, and live troubleshooting. Explain sensor behavior and AI capabilities clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Discuss use cases and application requirements during customer visits. Assess their relevance to the group’s technologies and feed operating constraints and integration insights into demonstrator planning.
  • Support customer evaluations and troubleshoot application problems. Guide setup and testing, reproduce issues, collect diagnostic evidence, and work with engineering colleagues to resolve problems and verify fixes.
  • Maintain a broad working understanding of the group’s sensing, robotics, software, and AI work. Connect customer questions to relevant capabilities and share application feedback with engineering colleagues.

Required qualifications
  • Hands-on experience integrating and debugging robotic or mechatronic systems, including actuators, sensors, control interfaces, and application software.
  • Working understanding of how sensing, control, and AI models interact in a robot system, including motion constraints, safe operation, and the limits of demonstrated capabilities.
  • Practical programming and debugging skills in Python or C++, and experience with robotics middleware such as ROS 2 or comparable frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of sensor installation, interfaces, and data quality, sufficient to integrate sensors and explain their behavior within a robot system.
  • Experience presenting technical capabilities to customers or partners, supporting evaluations and troubleshooting, and translating application feedback into input for research and engineering.
  • Ability to plan and deliver research demonstrators, coordinate dependencies across disciplines, and respond methodically to technical issues during live demonstrations.
  • Master’s or PhD in robotics, electrical or mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Relevant post-degree experience: 3–5 years after a master’s or 1–2 years after a PhD.

Preferred qualifications

The following are helpful but not required; expertise in every area is not expected.

  • Experience with robotic manipulation, teleoperation, or integration of sensor-equipped hands and grippers.
  • Experience deploying and evaluating learned robot policies or using simulation tools such as Isaac Sim or MuJoCo.
  • Experience supporting trade-show demonstrations or on-site customer evaluations of robotic systems.
