Opportunity

We are looking for a talented and passionate Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team. A background in mining or heavy industrial and processing sectors is preferred. The successful candidate would primarily be supporting Mining work in Phoenix, Arizona.  This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a strong interdisciplinary team that works on a variety of unique and exciting Energy & Resources projects across North America and Internationally and offers an excellent career development opportunity. 

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team of design and engineering professionals to deliver projects. Your primary duty will be to lead the electrical design and engineering portions of all phases of the projects you are assigned to, from planning through post-construction. 

You will be responsible for applying engineering knowledge and professional judgement acquired through experience to plan, size, evaluate, select, and specify electrical systems in accordance with relevant codes, standards and industry best practices. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include conducting field investigations, liaising with clients, carrying out detailed planning studies, preparing design calculations, authoring technical reports, delivering presentations to stakeholders, leading the development of construction packages (drawings and technical specifications), estimating construction costs, monitoring and supporting construction, participating in commissioning, and contributing to business development activities. You should be capable of working independently with minimal supervision and with a reflective mindset and a willingness to challenge both personal and teamwork.

Below are some of the responsibilities, but not limited to:

  • Act as an Engineer-of-Record for projects and/or project components.
  • Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.
  • Participates in client project requirement meetings, value engineering analysis, and basic cost estimating.
  • Develops and manages the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
  • Leads the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
  • Assists with the development of proposal.
  • Incorporation of innovation, optimization, and standardization in designs as appropriate considering constructability and economics.
  • Familiarity with Mine Safety and Health Administration Regulations is preferred.
  • Proven leadership abilities with strong project engineering experience, including coordination of multidisciplinary teams, project planning, and successful delivery of technical outcomes.
  • Oversees and manages multiple projects.
  • Provides guidance, training and mentorship for junior and intermediate engineers and designers.

Capabilities and Credentials

  • Participates and collaborates in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Advanced understanding of electrical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of National Electric Code and applicable energy codes.
  • Checks the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manages time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD; Prefer experience with AGI 32, Visual Lighting Software, ETAP, SKM, Revit (preferred).
  • Lead the preparation and coordination of electrical construction drawings, such as:
    • Single line diagrams (SLDs)
    • Power and Lighting Plans
    • Grounding and Lightning Protection Plans
    • Elevations
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Motor control schematics
    • Riser diagrams
    • Installation details
    • Schedules (panel schedules, cable schedules, etc.)
  • Lead the preparation of electrical technical specifications, equipment datasheets, and testing and commissioning plans.
  • Lead the coordination of electrical technical specifications and drawings with construction documents and other disciplines.
  • Lead the modeling, study, and analysis of power systems (load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and motor acceleration studies).
  • Familiar with design of mine infrastructure, including switch rooms, cabling, and tray systems; power distribution and GPR/charging current assessments; condition assessments and functional testing.
  • Experience in process control and instrumentation design for mine services, including material handling, hoisting systems, ventilation, process piping, and industrial building services. 
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to: 
    • Assist in the develop construction bid documents
    • Bid review, proposal development, and job hour estimates
    • Develop and build Client relations.
  • Assist with electrical construction, startup, and commissioning field support: client, contractor, and vendor interaction. 
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. 
  • Professional Engineering license is required. 
  • Eligibility for a Professional Engineering license in the State of Arizona and / or Southwestern US states.
  • 15 years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy industry or surface or underground mining. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work and collaborate with a range of internal and external customers.

Office Location and Schedule

  • Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at the infrastructure facilities.
  • Stantec offers flexible work environment. While our preference is for the successful candidate to work from the office at least two days per week, we are open to discussing hybrid work arrangements.
  • Location – Arizona, Colorado, Utah
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).

About the Team
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
