Our devices use frequency-stabilized lasers and atoms in a vacuum cell to measure accelerations, rotations, magnetic fields, and time with unparalleled accuracy and stability. Our staff includes physicists and engineers with expertise covering a wide array of disciplines. Our teams are dynamic and fast paced since our hardware is cutting edge.
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a hands-on electrical engineer to design and implement control systems for fieldable atom optic (AO) gyroscopes, accelerometers, absolute gravimeters, gravity gradiometers, inertial measurement units (IMUs),magnetometers, and atomic frequency standards. The control hardware for AO sensors spans a broad range of technologies including low-noise analog, low-jitter digital, rf/microwave, high voltage, microcontrollers, systems on a chip (SoCs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). An ideal candidate will have an unusually broad background covering several of these diverse technologies. As a Senior Electrical Engineer at AOSense, you will work with scientists and engineers to define control system requirements and architectures, will oversee the fabrication and testing of AO sensor control hardware, and will support the completed hardware through the performance validation phase. You will help to guide the development of future generations of quantum-atomic devices as they transition from the laboratory into the field.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with physicists, instrument designers, and code developers to specify sensor control requirements and make optimal trade-offs
- Guide the definition of control architectures for sensors
- Design low-noise analog, digital, and rf/microwave electronics
- Iterate existing electronics designs to adapt them for new operating conditions
- Conduct and participate in design reviews
- Create schedules and budgets for control system development
- Create work plans for electronics staff
- Track progress of electronics staff relative to project schedules
- Manage outsourced electronics development
- Collaborate with coders on development of software, firmware, and gateware
- Document new devices with block diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, bills of material, cable drawings, test procedures, and datasheets
- Contribute to proposals for further sensor development and applications
Requirements
- Experience selecting architectures for complex electronic instrumentation
- Demonstrated expertise in low-noise analog circuit development
- Deep understanding of noise sources in electronic systems
- Ability to critically evaluate electronics designs spanning a broad range of technologies
- Experience supervising and reviewing complex PCB layouts
- Expertise defining test plans for control electronics
- Demonstrated success in on-time and on-budget management of electronics development
- Proficiency with EE CAD tools (e.g., OrCAD, PADS, Altium, LTSpice, Mathcad, MATLAB)
- Thorough operational knowledge of standard diagnostic equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers)
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Applicants should thrive in a dynamic environment
- U.S. Government contracts require applicants to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with low-noise laser drivers and photodetectors, proportional, integral, differential (PID) control circuits, low-phase noise rf sources, and direct digital synthesizers (DDSs)
- Expertise developing instruments employing microcontrollers and Xilinx Zynq SoCs
- Successful implementation of FPGA-based real-time measurement systems

What We Do
AOSense, Inc. is a leading developer and manufacturer of quantum technologies. We build systems and sub-components including atom optic devices for precision navigation, gravity measurement, timekeeping and quantum computing. Our capabilities include gyroscopes, accelerometers, inertial measurement units (IMUs), gravimeters, gravity gradiometers, and atomic frequency standards. A variety of quantum technologies such as computing, magnetometry and quantum communication benefit from our development of sub-components such as compact and stable laser systems, atom sources, and a variety of hardware. AOSense was formed in 2004 by Brenton Young and Mark Kasevich to spin-off innovative research developed at Stanford University, joined by Jim Spilker as Chairman. In 2006, AOSense was awarded its first prime contract from DARPA to design, build, and test a gravity gradiometer and single axis accelerometer/gyroscope. Since then, AOSense has successfully designed and built state-of-the-art cold atom technology for numerous government sponsored programs funded by DARPA, Air Force, Army, Navy, NASA, NSF, DTRA, and the intelligence community. AOSense is an employee-owned company.
