Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking several imaginative, collaborative and ambitious editors to elevate and drive visual storytelling.

We are hiring senior editors for visuals to work with four departments. These editors will conceive and orchestrate best-in-class visual presentations, help educate others on how to scale this thinking and must be adept at building and fostering relationships. This initial group of senior visuals editors will join with current visual enterprise editors to cover six of eight coverage departments — National, Politics & Government, Futures, International, Local and Investigative.

These roles will work strategically and tactically with department heads, senior audience editors and graphics, video, design and photo editors to ensure our visual report at the story and promotion level is consistently excellent. This new cohort of visual leaders will evaluate and improve all our work while also ensuring timeliness to maximize our reach.

Senior visuals editors will be responsible for coming up with story ideas and seeing them through to fruition as well as fostering experimentation in our storytelling across platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadvisual-first news and projects for a content area.

  • Work closely with the relevant department head, senior audience editors and assignment editors to identify opportunities.

  • Serve as key collaborator with visual and data departments across the organization.

  • Drive ambition and experimentation in all our work.

  • Create opportunities for visual storytellers to gain new skills and grow.

  • Train editors and reporters on creating immersive and alternative story forms.

  • Be audience-centric, especially in looking for opportunities for personalization.

  • Develop strategies to optimize workflows and tools.

  • Ensure all visual teams are analyzing the same list of stories to optimize the strength of presentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of professional experience creating or overseeing visual journalism, including design, photo, graphics and data visualization.

  • A deep understanding of tools and techniques used to create multimedia and data-driven storytelling.

  • An eye for design and clarity in articulating design decisions, with a passion for creating reader-focused digital experiences.

  • Experience organizing and editing journalists on deadline and handling multiple projects with overlapping timelines.

  • A knowledge of, or deep interest in the relevant department’s subject matter is preferred.

  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit.

These jobs are based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

Interested candidates should upload three examples of their work, a résumé and a cover letter describing their interest in the role and which content desks they are interested in working with to ourjobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by May 18 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Head of Visuals Greg Manifold.

The starting salary range for this position is: $154,000.00  — $205,300.00. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
