Afar is looking for a senior editor to join its digital editorial team.
The senior editor will be responsible for top editing a variety of text-based digital travel content, from daily news to longreads. They will work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, coordinating with other editors and reporting to the editorial director.
Essential Functions:
Line editing and top editing several stories a day
Headline and display writing
Story packaging
Idea development
Assigning articles
Cultivating relationships with freelance writers from a diverse range of backgrounds and identities
Writing and updating articles
Organizing and developing content calendars
Attending industry events and meetings
Note: This role does not guarantee travel
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years hands-on text editing experience
5-7 years working in a deadline-driven, journalism environment
Sharp line editing, story shaping, and packaging skills
Reporting experience and knowledge of fact-checking best practices
Meticulous attention to detail and grammar
Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
Ability to write clear, engaging copy and help others to do the same
Agility in storytelling skills, jumping from a longform feature to a short news item to a roundup to a destination spotlight
Excellent communication skills and ability to cooperate effectively with staff and freelancers in a remote work environment
Experience assigning and commissioning articles
Competent in updated SEO practices
Experience working in a CMS
Familiarity and interest in multimedia storytelling
Must have a passion for travel, and be interested in conceptualizing new and interesting ways to create travel storytelling
