Lonely Planet is creating the exciting new role of Guidebook Development Editor to fill its guidebooks with great ideas. This role will work with our new Consumer Insight function to continually improve the content and design of our guidebook series (working with a designer and cartographer) to meet the changing needs of travelers. This means reviewing the content each series delivers, and in what format (words, maps, photos, infographics, etc). You’ll create the templates and guidelines our Commissioning Editors use to create individual destination guides.

We are looking for a creative thinker who understands the changing needs of travelers globally, has a keen eye for information design and is a great editor. Journalism or editing experience is required, as is a passion for travel.

What You’ll Do:

  • Continually improve Lonely Planet’s guidebook series, reviewing content and design, to make sure they remain relevant through the 2020s
  • Work with Consumer Insight to rigorously test new concepts, and get ahead of emerging consumer needs
  • Create templates, guidelines and training for our commissioning and production teams to ensure consistent excellence in every guidebook

What We’re Looking For:

  • An understanding of complex information design in print, gained from working in magazine, newspaper or illustrated non-fiction publishing
  • Trained editor with at least 3 years’ experience
  • Solid background of writing for consumers
  • Ability to analyze and interpret market trends and other external perspectives to identify content and product opportunities
  • A commitment to quality and continuous improvement – including a willingness to question current practice, to be hands-on and with strong attention to detail

Compensation

  • New York City Compensation Range: $84,000 - $96,000
    • *Note actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.

Additionally, the following benefits are provided by Red Ventures, subject to eligibility requirements.
