The Senior Director, Commercial Development is a senior commercial role, focused on accelerating growth across Lonza’s Advanced Synthesis platform. This position serves as a commercial expert in Small Molecules API manufacturing and plays a key role in executing strategic growth initiatives.

The role combines deep CDMO and technical expertise with commercial leadership, supporting customer engagements, identifying new market opportunities and developing differentiated business models and offerings that strengthen Lonza’s position in the Small Molecules market.

This is a highly collaborative and customer-facing role, working closely with Commercial Development, Sales, Marketing, Portfolio Management, Operations, R&D, Site Leadership and the wider Advanced Synthesis leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute Lonza’s strategic growth plan for Small Molecules, including commercial ownership of customer proposals and negotiations.

  • Support the development and implementation of new business offerings aligned with Advanced Synthesis priorities.

  • Provide commercial and technical expertise during customer engagements, industry conferences and strategic discussions.

  • Partner with Marketing, Sales and Portfolio Management to identify and secure attractive market and customer opportunities.

  • Develop commercial strategies and new business models that strengthen Lonza’s competitive position and support long-term growth.

  • Maintain close collaboration with Operations, Site Leadership and R&D to align market opportunities with capabilities, capacity and investment plans.

  • Monitor market trends, competitive activity and emerging technologies to identify new growth opportunities.

  • Foster strong cross-functional collaboration across Commercial, Technical, Operations and Business Leadership.

Key Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Engineering or a related discipline; an advanced degree and/or MBA is preferred.

  • Extensive experience in the CDMO industry, particularly in Small Molecule drug substance and/or drug product.

  • Strong understanding of the drug development process and Small Molecule manufacturing.

  • Strong spray drying expertise.

  • Proven commercial leadership, customer engagement and negotiation experience.

  • Ability to lead and influence effectively in a complex, matrixed organization.

  • Strong strategic thinking, communication, problem-solving and organizational skills.

  • Customer-focused and results-oriented mindset.

  • Operations or manufacturing experience is an advantage.

  • Willingness to travel up to approximately 40%.

  • Business-fluent English.
