We are looking for an engineering professional with experience in mine planning, operations and projects. The successful candidate is adept at communication, collaboration, risk identification, and has a growth mindset enabling them to support long term asset development at Fort Hills. The ideal candidate can leverage their experience to deliver key engineering outputs, collaborate and help to drive impactful, business aligned results.

Reporting to the Director of Mine - Integrated Planning, the Development Engineer will focus on a broad understanding of business-critical fields such as legal, commercial, regulatory, finance, economics, etc. and growing their understanding of development principles, mindsets, and processes. The successful applicant will work with and support Tier 3 Development leads at Fort Hills, within the Integrated Planning Team in Mine Services (key areas include Tailings McLelland Lake, Material Handling, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Mining or Civil Engineering or equivalent with 7-10 years of experience, with at least 5 years of this experience gained working at an operating mine sites

  • Direct experience with Mine Operations and Planning (preferably oilsands with experience at Fort Hills, but will consider equivalent)

  • Project experience and exposure to Development

  • Strong communicator with interpersonal and collaborative skills to ensure alignment between diverse groups

  • Originality and ingenuity required for devising practical and economical solutions to problems

  • Can lead change through all steps of innovation, development, risk management, implementation, training and sustainment.

Responsibilities:

  • Skilled in problem/opportunity framing, determining the necessary engineering studies and tasks for critical project stages

  • Proficient at identifying/differentiating/eliminating alternatives, optimizing concepts, and delivering essential engineering outputs such as feasibility studies, concept select reports, and Design Basis Memoranda (DBMs).

  • Manage multiple complex mining and tailings projects, collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely and impactful deliverables that align with Suncor's business objectives.

  • Collaborate with integrated teams to meet milestones while engaging internal and external stakeholders effectively, identifying risks and opportunities, leveraging various resources to solve complex mining, tailings and closure challenges.

  • This position requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic leadership, and a willingness to independently drive project success at Fort Hills with a keen eye for future strategic asset planning.

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.

  • This is an office-based role, hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with travel to site is based on requirement

  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work.
