The opportunity: We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design and implementation of scalable data lakehouse architectures and data pipelines. You will play a critical role in building modern, reliable, and efficient data platforms that support advanced analytics, business intelligence, and machine learning workloads. Experience with cloud platforms like GCP is a plus.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Data Engineer at Ship.Cars, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines (batch and/or streaming) for ingesting, processing, and transforming large volumes of structured and unstructured data
- Implement and manage data lakehouse architectures using best-of-breed technologies (e.g., Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg, etc.)
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define data models, schemas, and data marts to support analytics and reporting
- Ensure high standards of data quality, observability, lineage, and governance
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT processes, ensuring performance, scalability, and fault tolerance
- Contribute to the design and implementation of data access controls and security policies
- Evaluate new tools and technologies to improve data infrastructure and workflows
- Collaborate with DevOps to build CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and monitoring for data systems
What We're Looking For (Qualifications)
Our ideal candidate has the following skills and qualities:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering roles
- Strong experience with modern data architectures: data lakes, lakehouses, data warehouses
- Proficiency in SQL and Python (or Scala/Java)
- Hands-on experience with tools like Apache Spark, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, or equivalent
- Experience with cloud-native or on-prem big data platforms
- Solid understanding of data modeling, distributed computing, and performance optimization
- Strong knowledge of data governance, quality frameworks, and privacy compliance
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to take ownership and drive projects independently
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail
