The Role

At Envitia, we're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help design and deliver cutting-edge data solutions for customers operating in some of the UK's most complex and challenging environments. Using Databricks, Apache Spark and cloud-native technologies, you'll develop scalable Lakehouse architectures and production-grade data pipelines that enable organisations to trust, share and exploit their data more effectively.

You'll have the opportunity to take technical ownership of high-impact data engineering projects, working alongside talented engineers, architects and data specialists to tackle complex challenges at scale. Beyond delivering solutions, you'll help shape best practice, mentor team members and influence the future direction of our data engineering capability.

If you're a data engineer who enjoys combining hands-on technical delivery with technical leadership and wants to work on meaningful programmes that make a difference, Envitia offers an exciting opportunity to grow your career while helping customers unlock the power of their data.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and optimise scalable data pipelines using Databricks, Apache Spark, PySpark and Delta Lake.
  • Develop and implement modern Lakehouse architectures, applying Medallion (Bronze, Silver, Gold) design principles to support trusted and reusable data products.
  • Build robust ETL and ELT processes that ingest, transform and curate large, complex and diverse datasets.
  • Drive best practice in data quality, monitoring, alerting and operational support to ensure reliable and resilient data solutions.
  • Optimise platform performance, scalability and cost through effective management of compute, storage and orchestration services.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of enterprise data architectures, standards and engineering patterns across customer programmes.
  • Integrate data platforms with cloud-native services, data lakes, event streams, warehouses and other enterprise systems.
  • Implement data governance, security and access controls, including Unity Catalog or equivalent technologies, to ensure data remains secure, discoverable and compliant.
  • Lead technical delivery across data engineering workstreams, ensuring solutions meet customer requirements, quality standards and delivery timelines.
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts, architects and business stakeholders to deliver end-to-end data solutions that create measurable value.
  • Support DevOps and CI/CD practices for data engineering, enabling efficient deployment, testing and operational management of data products.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practice, contributing to the ongoing evolution of Envitia's data engineering capability.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven hands-on experience building and supporting production-grade data pipelines using Databricks, PySpark, Spark SQL and Delta Lake.
  • Experience designing and implementing Lakehouse architectures, including Medallion (Bronze, Silver, Gold) data models.
  • Expertise in developing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines capable of handling large and complex datasets.
  • Understanding of modern cloud data platforms, particularly Azure and/or AWS.
  • Experience implementing data governance, security and quality controls, including Unity Catalog or equivalent technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling, data lifecycle management and data engineering best practices.
  • Experience optimising data workloads for performance, scalability, reliability and cost efficiency.
  • Ability to make sound technical and architectural decisions within complex delivery environments.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience leading technical delivery and supporting the successful execution of data engineering projects.

What We Do

Envitia is a data software and services company that solves complex data challenges. Data is at the heart of every digital transformation project. It’s part of the competitive world we live in yet organisations are struggling to make sense of the explosion of data from multiple data sources and formats from sensors to social media and Government open data. Data needs data experts to solve complex issues such as differing data sources, multiple data formats, missing data or poor data quality (the main reason for any failed digital project). With our technology and data expertise we help customers, across public and private sectors, solve business problems or improve decision-making by making better use of accurate and relevant data
