The Opportunity: Senior Data Engineer / Architect

We’re building something groundbreaking at Flip, and we need a seasoned data engineer or architect to help us scale. You’ll be a key player in the design and development of large-scale data systems to support everything from data science to real-time analytics. If you thrive on architecting big data solutions, love solving complex problems, and are passionate about new technologies, this is the role for you. As part of a new team, you'll have a unique chance to set the strategy, culture, technology, and working norms.

This role can be based fully remote in NYC, the SF Bay Area, or office-based in LA.

What You’ll Do:

• Develop Data Strategy: Help define and implement the data strategy, using best practices in data architecture to solve business challenges across multiple functions.
• Build & Scale Systems: Design and implement scalable data pipelines, data lakes, and processing systems to handle large-scale customer data, enabling data scientists to run models in batch and real-time.
• Support Data Science & Analytics: Collaborate with data science teams to operationalize models, ensuring smooth and efficient data flows to enable advanced analytics and personalized shopping experiences.
• Optimize Performance: Continuously improve and scale systems for performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Focus on reducing latency and maximizing efficiency across data platforms.
• Digital Transformation: Drive innovation by adopting and implementing new digital tools and methods. Play a key role in Flip’s digital transformation by building cutting-edge data systems.

What You’ll Bring:

• Technical Expertise: Extensive experience with big data technologies like Spark, Scala, Kafka, and Hadoop. Proficiency in cloud platforms like GCP, AWS, or Azure.
• Experience in Data Streaming: Expertise in building real-time data streaming solutions, using tools like Kafka Streams or similar, and processing large datasets with low latency.
• CI/CD & Automation: Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines and operationalizing data pipelines, with tools like Airflow, NiFi, and others.
• Distributed Systems Knowledge: A deep understanding of distributed systems and their architecture, including experience with scaling systems and ensuring high availability.
• Curiosity & Growth Mindset: A passion for staying up-to-date with the latest technology trends and using innovative approaches to solve problems.
• Collaboration & Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams, particularly in product and data science.

Compensation & Benefits:

Base salary and total compensation will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. Please note the base salary is just one component of the company’s total rewards package for exempt employees. Other rewards may include equity, bonuses, long term incentives, a PTO policy, and other progressive benefits.
