SMX is seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer to lead State and Local Government customers through their digital modernization journey. This person will have experience helping drive transformation leveraging the latest DevOps frameworks and tool chains. The position requires a balance of expert DevOps systems knowledge, application architecture knowledge, AWS infrastructure deployment best practices combined with strong consulting, mentoring, documentation, and overall technical experience. Experience working in highly compliant environments. This is a remote position supporting a Boston, MA based team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Complete setup and configuration of the DevOps environment, aligning with best practices to enhance operational efficiency and scalability.
- Perform detailed assessments of the current DevOps processes to document strengths, gaps, and improvement opportunities, including identifying security vulnerabilities and risks.
- Adapt and embed DevOps best practices into the customer’s unique organizational processes and workflows, ensuring alignment with security standards and compliance requirements.
- Establish and guide teams in building CI/CD pipelines with automation tools to achieve continuous testing and delivery, incorporating security checks into every stage of the pipeline (DevSecOps).
- Facilitate cultural transformation workshops or training sessions to embed a DevOps mindset across teams, emphasizing the importance of security awareness and practices.
- Use tools like Terraform, GitHub Actions, Packer, Ansible, and AWS SSM to deploy efficient, repeatable, and scalable cloud infrastructure, ensuring proper access controls and security configurations.
- Design actionable risk management strategies, including fallback plans for potential deployment or operational issues, with a focus on mitigating security risks.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager/Tech Lead to define and manage deliverables, goals, and milestones, ensuring security requirements are part of all project phases.
- Produce and regularly update clear, comprehensive project documentation to track progress and communicate updates, highlighting security-related processes and considerations.
- Utilize AWS serverless services (e.g., Lambda, DynamoDB) to create efficient, modern solutions, ensuring compliance with AWS security best practices.
- Plan and perform data migrations to AWS, focusing on RDS and storage services, while minimizing downtime, ensuring data integrity, and protecting sensitive information.
- Build robust disaster recovery strategies, testing regularly to ensure system resilience and secure recovery of critical data.
- Incorporate security best practices into day-to-day tasks and ensure the team is educated on the latest threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies.
Required Skills:
- Minimum 6-8 years of experience designing, configuring, and deploying solutions based on AWS and DevOps best practices, as both an individual contributor and a team lead.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS and third-party migration acceleration tools.
- 2+ years of experience with AWS database and database migration services.
- 2+ years of experience with AWS file storage and migration technologies.
- 2+ years of experience with AWS Disaster Recovery tools.
- Experience in developing detailed data migration plans for migration factories.
- Demonstrated expertise in business agility.
- Excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated, well-organized, and strong in innovation and facilitation skills.
- Well-developed critical, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent meeting leadership and requirements gathering skills.
- Demonstrated ability as a flexible, process-oriented, logical thinker and team player.

- Preferred AWS Solutions Architect - Professional certification.
- Preferred AWS Certified DevOps Engineer certification.
- Preferred AWS Certified Developer certification.
- Preferred AWS Certified SysOps Administrator certification.
- Former government or enterprise consulting experience is a plus.

$115,700—$192,900 USD
