The role – what you’ll do
Barr is seeking a senior business intelligence developer to join our Minneapolis, Minnesota, team. In this hybrid role, you will enhance our business intelligence and data analysis capabilities and support Barr’s internal data warehouse, semantic models, and reporting while advancing our use of modern, cloud-based technologies. This role will lead the design and development of platforms that support multiple BI solutions, with an emphasis on scalable data models, Microsoft Fabric integration, platform performance, governance, and reliable data delivery.
A successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with effective communication and the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams. They are able to clearly explain technical recommendations and tradeoffs to a variety of audiences. They will also be a self-motivated professional who takes initiative, exercises sound judgment, and manages competing priorities effectively.
Your impact – key responsibilities
- Data modeling and architecture: Design dimensional models and semantic layers that support reporting, self-service analytics, and AI-enabled data use. Integrate lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, and Power BI semantic models using Microsoft Fabric to improve performance and reduce duplication. Review designs and promote standards that support consistent, maintainable BI solutions.
- Platform performance and reliability: Optimize SQL, DAX, semantic models, processing, and refresh strategies. Implement validation, monitoring, documentation, and troubleshooting practices.
- BI governance and delivery: Establish and implement practices for workspaces, deployment pipelines, source control, security, releases, and change management.
- Business partnership and technical guidance: Guide complex BI initiatives and evaluate emerging technologies. Collaborate with technical and business teams to translate business needs into sustainable solutions and communicate progress, risks, and technical recommendations.
About the opportunity
- A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.
About you – required core competencies
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience
- Experience: 10 or more years of relevant experience
- Designing, building, and maintaining enterprise BI solutions, from data ingestion and transformation through data warehouse models, Power BI semantic models, and reports
- Optimizing data warehouse and semantic model performance
- Applying DevOps practices to BI solutions, including source control, deployment pipelines, testing, and change management
- Implementing established data governance practices for BI, such as data definitions, quality checks, access controls, and documentation
- Advanced proficiency with SQL, DAX, dimensional modeling, and semantic models; strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Software: Experience with Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, or a comparable cloud analytics platform
- Communication: Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical recommendations and tradeoffs to varied audiences.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future

- Cloud migration and Azure data and analytics services
- Fabric capacity and workload management
- APIs, automation, and workflow orchestration
- Familiarity with AI-enabled capabilities and their application to BI, analytics, or reporting solutions
Compensation: Anticipated range of $100,000–$125,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
