About the team and platform

Team is responsible for supporting and evolving the core CarCutter platform.
Building and releasing new features, improve customer satisfaction, and ensure that the platform remains scalable, reliable, and easy to operate as the business grows.

Over the past two years, we have been modernizing our technology stack and architecture. This includes progressively moving from a monolithic backend to a service-oriented architecture, with dedicated storage and clearer ownership across services. This transformation is still ongoing, and some legacy components remain to be decomposed or replaced.

You will help shape how we build and operate software in the cloud, make better use of AWS services, and improve the speed, reliability, and scalability of our systems.

You will work with Flavio, our Engineering Manager, Joffrey and Sebastien, Senior Backend Engineers closely with François and the wider Product, Design, and Engineering organization.

The role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will work on the core systems behind CarCutter’s image processing platform.

Our Python backend integrates with multiple APIs that trigger image-processing workflows and connect to our computer vision services. We use SQL databases and message queues to manage images and deliver results directly to customer systems.

You will help ensure the smooth flow of images across our platform, operate reliable containerized Linux services, and monitor and improve our AWS infrastructure. You will also contribute to our engineering practices, including source code management, automated testing, documentation, and CI/CD.

This role also offers the opportunity to help define the next generation of software development at CarCutter. We are introducing AI coding agents and agentic workflows across the software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and technical specifications to implementation, testing, code review, documentation, incident investigation, and operational improvements.

We are looking for someone who is curious about these new ways of working, while applying strong technical judgment and taking full ownership of the resulting software.

What you’ll do
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services in Python.

  • Build flexible and reliable solutions that meet customer and product requirements.

  • Improve and operate our AWS cloud infrastructure.

  • Support the transition from our legacy monolith to a more modular and scalable architecture.

  • Improve automated testing, including unit and end-to-end testing.

  • Develop and maintain APIs, database integrations, message queues, and image-processing workflows.

  • Apply DevOps practices to make computer vision capabilities reliably available to all customers.

  • Monitor systems, investigate incidents, and continuously improve platform reliability and performance.

  • Contribute to architecture, security, documentation, CI/CD, and engineering standards.

  • Collaborate with application, frontend, cloud, data, and AI teams across the organization.

  • Use AI coding agents and agentic workflows where they improve engineering outcomes, including implementation, refactoring, test creation, research, documentation, and incident response.

  • Help define how agent-assisted work should be reviewed, tested, secured, monitored, and deployed safely.

  • Evaluate new agentic practices and turn successful approaches into repeatable workflows.

  • Share knowledge and contribute to a collaborative, high-quality engineering culture.

What we’re looking for
  • At least five years of experience in backend software development.

  • Strong expertise in Python.

  • Hands-on experience with Linux, including system administration and networking fundamentals.

  • Experience working with SQL databases and queue-based processing.

  • A solid understanding of software architecture, APIs and protocols, containers, security, and distributed systems.

  • Experience with software development best practices, including TDD, BDD, automated testing, documentation, and CI/CD.

  • Experience developing, operating, and monitoring cloud-based solutions, preferably on AWS.

  • Strong source code management practices, preferably with Git.

  • A proactive and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.

  • A strong sense of ownership and attention to quality.

  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team.

  • Professional working proficiency in English.

AI-assisted development
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools or coding agents in real engineering work, or a strong interest in adopting them thoughtfully.

  • The ability to critically assess AI-generated code and recommendations, including their correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational impact.

  • An interest in improving not only software, but also the workflows used to specify, develop, review, and operate it.

Nice to have
  • Experience with Terraform.

  • Experience with AWS services such as API Gateway, Lambda, ECS and RDS.

  • Experience operating image-processing or data-intensive systems.
