We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Back-End Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team and play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, secure, and resilient software platforms.

This is a senior technical position suited to an engineer with 10+ years of commercial software development experience who is passionate about backend architecture, engineering excellence, and team development. You'll be responsible for leading complex technical initiatives, influencing architectural direction, and mentoring engineers across the organization.

This role is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take the next step toward a future Principal Engineer position. Beyond hands-on development, you'll act as a technical leader, helping shape engineering standards, supporting the growth of other engineers, and driving the adoption of modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted software development.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deliver complex back-end services, APIs, and distributed systems that power business-critical and customer-facing applications.
  • Lead the technical delivery of strategic initiatives from concept through production deployment.
  • Drive architectural decisions that improve scalability, maintainability, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices, leveraging tools such as GitHub Copilot and agentic workflows throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions, estimates, and delivery plans.
  • Design and implement robust APIs, microservices, and data-driven solutions.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges.
  • Conduct code reviews and design reviews to ensure high engineering standards across teams.
  • Define and improve best practices for testing, observability, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Investigate complex production issues and drive continuous improvement through root-cause analysis.
  • Ensure solutions meet security, compliance, reliability, and performance requirements.
  • Serve as a senior technical mentor for engineers across the organization, providing coaching, guidance, and hands-on support to accelerate individual and team growth.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers and technical leaders to help develop engineering capability, career progression frameworks, and technical excellence initiatives.
  • Lead by example in promoting a culture of collaboration, ownership, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of commercial software engineering experience, with a strong focus on back-end development.
  • Expert-level proficiency in C# and .NET.
  • Extensive experience designing, building, and supporting scalable APIs, services, and distributed systems.
  • Proven experience delivering secure, resilient, high-performance software solutions in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, ideally Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong experience with relational databases, data modelling, and query optimisation, ideally with SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
  • Solid knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern deployment approaches.
  • Strong understanding of secure software development principles and application security.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction.
  • Significant experience mentoring and developing engineers at different stages of their careers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve software delivery, quality, and productivity.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or similar messaging technologies.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and GitOps practices.
  • Experience operating containerized workloads on Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to front-end technologies such as TypeScript, Vue.js, or modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Experience implementing monitoring, observability, and operational tooling.
