Overview & Responsibilities

The Senior Application Engineer serves as a technical authority and strategic commercial partner within the rotating equipment and turbomachinery manufacturing sector. This role is responsible for leading the design, proposal development, and commercial execution of mission-critical centrifugal machinery including compressors, steam turbines, expanders, and pumps—for major global clients across Petrochemical, LNG, and emerging Clean Energy markets.

Position Purpose
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert in the application and system integration of centrifugal rotating equipment, including centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, expanders, and pumps.
  • Architect and deliver competitive, high-reliability technical proposals and engineered-to-order solutions tailored to client specifications across the Petrochemical, LNG, and Sustainability markets.
  • Deliver joint technical and commercial leadership to expand market share, support sales pursuits, and advance key strategic business initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary technical bridge across multidisciplinary teams—liaising with engineering, operations, global manufacturing hubs, and customer representatives to clarify bid details and create high-impact promotional technical materials.

Key Responsibilities
Proposal Engineering & Equipment Design
  • Inquiry Evaluation & Bid Strategy: Thoroughly analyze customer inquiries, design requests, and tender specifications to evaluate project objectives, aligning closely with sales teams to devise competitive bidding strategies based on market trends, budgets, and competitive dynamics.
  • Aerodynamic & Mechanical Machine Sizing: Perform comprehensive machine sizing and engineering analyses, covering aerodynamic performance, rotordynamic stability, stress and strain evaluations, and overall mechanical integrity.
  • Scope Definition & Balance of Plant: Define the scope of supply for equipment packages and auxiliary systems surrounding the primary turbomachinery train.
  • Cost Engineering & Estimation: Build accurate cost models encompassing core hardware, labor, engineering hours, drafting, vendor-supplied components, testing, and project-specific contingency costs.
  • Vendor Sourcing & Sub-Supplier Specifications: Author technical specifications for major purchased auxiliary equipment and act as the principal engineering authority managing sub-vendor technical evaluations.
  • Proposal Delivery: Assemble and issue comprehensive proposal packages, including detailed engineering data sheets, performance curves, scope matrices, pricing breakdowns, project delivery schedules, and technical/commercial exceptions and deviations.
  • Sales Support: Assist sales representatives in delivering technical presentations, value propositions, and bid walk-throughs to customer evaluation teams.

Technical & Commercial Support (Quote-to-Award Phase)
  • Bid Clarifications: Rapidly resolve technical and commercial queries raised by sales teams and client engineering teams throughout the bidding cycle.
  • Proposal Optimization: Revise and re-rate equipment configurations, scopes, and proposals as project parameters and customer requirements evolve.
  • Commercial Alignment: Partner with sales and executive management to fine-tune scope, delivery schedules, and pricing structures to maintain competitive positioning while preserving gross margins.
  • Pre-Contract Alignment: Participate directly in pre-award meetings, customer clarification sessions, and contract negotiation discussions.

Project Transfer & Post-Order Support
  • Global Team Handover: Transition awarded contracts smoothly to project execution teams in the USA and Japan.
  • Design Specification Handover: Prepare final design specifications and baseline engineering documents reflecting final negotiated terms.
  • Kick-Off Coordination: Lead and attend internal and client-facing kick-off meetings and formal handover sessions.
  • Project Definition Packages: Compile and deliver comprehensive project handover packages—including original and revised inquiry specifications, final scope definitions, detailed costing files, delivery milestones, and engineering schedules—to assigned Project Managers.
  • Ongoing Engineering Advisory: Serve as the continuous technical and commercial consultant to the Project Manager throughout the detailed engineering, procurement, and testing phases.

Process Optimization & Continuous Improvement
  • Design Automation: Develop and refine standardized workflows, automating repetitive calculation routines and equipment selection procedures to accelerate inquiry turnaround times.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Enhance interface protocols and information sharing between internal divisions, specifically between the New Equipment engineering team and the Rerate/Aftermarket services group.
  • Technology & Market Intelligence: Stay at the forefront of turbomachinery technology through industry periodicals, trade symposiums, technical papers, and formal internal/external training programs.
  • Competitive Analysis: Monitor competitor offerings, patent releases, and customer trends to identify emerging technology applications and continuous product enhancement opportunities.

Strategic Market Initiatives & Business Development
  • Market Analytics: Leverage specialized engineering expertise, commercial insight, and industry networks to conduct quantitative and qualitative market assessments.
  • Technical Thought Leadership: Author white papers, application guidelines, and technical reports to assist sales and marketing in launching new technologies and penetrating emerging applications.
  • Client Engagement: Lead high-level technical presentations to engineering contractors (EPCs) and end users to drive brand preference and early-stage project specification development.

Required Qualifications & Technical Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent) with extensive understanding of aerodynamic and thermodynamic performance principles (gas properties, heat transfer, efficiency, head, work).
  • Proven design and application knowledge of centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, expanders, pumps, and key auxiliary packages (motors, gears, lube systems, etc.).
  • Strong mechanical and analytical capabilities in rotordynamics, bearings, seals, metallurgy/materials, and dynamic/thermal stress and strain.
  • Proven techno-commercial capability to strategically balance equipment cost, performance, delivery lead times, and operating reliability.
  • Familiarity with target sectors and emerging sustainability markets, including Hydrogen, CCS/CCUS, Ammonia, and Energy Storage.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail for authoring customer proposals, technical papers, procedures, and presenting in commercial meetings.
  • Proficiency with engineering application software, standard productivity tools (Word, Excel, Lotus Notes), and Sun/IBM operating environments.
  • Ability to travel an average of 4–6 times per year (typically 2–3 days per trip) to support sales pursuits, attend pre-contract meetings, participate in trade shows/discussion groups, present technical papers, and complete off-site training.
