GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for grant, general ledger, and financial statement functions. The work of the Senior Accountant is in accordance with the Covenant House Mission, Principles, and Core Values.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Initiate and maintain positive, professional, and mentoring relationships with youth and staff in accordance with the Covenant House Mission, Principles, and Core Values.
- Promote a peaceful, healing environment by utilizing the principles and practices of trauma- informed care and positive youth development in all aspects of work and youth engagement, including crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation.
- Ensure that Covenant House New Orleans (CHNO) is a welcoming, safe, and secure “homelike” environment for youth receiving services.
General Accounting
- Maintain general accounting records.
- Generate monthly regular, recurring and reversing journal entries.
- Perform payroll uploads from payroll system to accounting system.
- Perform monthly and quarterly investment accounts reconciliations.
- Perform quarterly 941 reconciliations.
- Conduct quarterly accounting analysis and reconciliation to general ledger (g/l).
- In collaboration with leadership/ management, assist with the compilation of departmental budgets including but not limited to uploading budget data into accounting system.
- Assist with year-end close of accounting records.
- Work with auditors on annual audit including but not limited to the preparation of audit schedules and work papers and the completion of special financial analysis as needed.
- Maintain and reconcile g/l balance sheet accounts ensuring accuracy of
- reporting.
- Assist with financial statement preparation.
- Maintain various accounting record and files.
Grant Accounting
- Prepare timely billings and/or cost reimbursement reports to funding sources with appropriate supporting documentation.
- Maintain accurate account of all allowable grant costs including any matching requirements, in accordance with federal guidelines.
- Assist with the preparation of Quarterly and Annual Progress Reports for assigned grants.
- Generate detail monthly YTD budget variance reports for assigned grants.
- Prepare monthly journal entries for assigned grants.
- Perform monthly reviews of cost allocation and time and effort supporting documentation of grant funded expenditures, including grant time and activity records.
- Perform quarterly g/l reconciliations for assigned grants.
- Monitor agency’s compliance with assigned grant contracts.
- Maintain an effective level of communication with management, as well as all grantors.
- Other duties as assigned.

QualificationsEDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field from an accredited college or university required.
- Five (5) years of experience in general and grant accounting with a not-for-profit organization required.
- Detail oriented and accurate.
- Flexible solutions oriented professional with the ability to work independently and multi-task.
- Expert knowledge of Excel and proficient in MS Office products.
- Proactive communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
