About the Role

The Senior Accountant plays a key role on the Finance team, supporting the accuracy, integrity, and timely management of TAAF’s financial operations.  The Senior Accountant is responsible for core accounting activities, including monthly financial close, balance sheet reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable. Working closely with the Controller and cross-functional partners, this role helps ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded, reconciled, and supported by appropriate documentation and internal controls.

The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail, sound judgement, and commitment to transparency and accountability. They are comfortable taking ownership of their work while collaborating across teams, identifying and resolving discrepancies, and continuously improving processes.  

Responsibilities

  • Support the monthly financial close process, including preparation and review of account reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Support the annual financial audit, including preparation of grant, contribution, and other accounting schedules and supporting documentation
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and other financial reporting
  • Manage accounts payable activities, including accurate and timely processing of payments
  • Record and reconcile contribution revenue and accounts receivable related to donations, including reconciliation between the donor database and general ledger
  • Maintain accurate accounting records for grants awarded by TAAF, including grant commitments, grant payables, disbursements, and related reconciliations 
  • Reconcile grant activity between the general ledger and TAAF’s grantmaking/grants management records and investigate and resolve discrepancies
  • Review executed grant agreements and supporting documentation to ensure accounting treatment, payment schedules, and financial coding
  • Support month-end and year-end closing by ensuring activities are accurately recorded in the appropriate accounting period
  • Support internal controls related to contributions, grant approvals and disbursements, account payable, and other financial transaction
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Requirements

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; equivalent experience may be considered
  • 5 -7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including experience independently managing reconciliations, general ledger activity, and month-end close responsibilities.
  • Experience in nonprofit, foundation, or grantmaking accounting strongly preferred.
  • Experience accounting for grants, including grant commitments, payables, disbursements, and reconciliations, strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting annual financial audits and preparing schedules and supporting documentation. 
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or comparable accounting system strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Salesforce or another Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system or grants management system preferred. 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices, with the ability to accurately record, reconcile, and analyze financial transactions.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned accounting processes, identify discrepancies, troubleshoot issues, and follow through with resolution.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate and complete financial records.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines, including month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Finance, Development, Programs, and other teams to reconcile financial and grantmaking information.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive financial information with discretion and sound judgement.
  • Strong organizational, time management, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to transparency, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Working Hours, Location & Schedule

  • In-Office Days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in our New York City office 
  • Remote Days: Mondays and Fridays offer work-from-home flexibility
  • Requires occasional weekend, off-hours, or evening work

Benefits

The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) is committed to salary transparency and pay equity. The hiring range for this position is $88,800 - $99,900 which is carefully benchmarked against the market to ensure competitiveness.  Final offers are determined through a structured analysis of relevant experience, skills, and role scope to ensure internal pay equity.
