Standard Bot’s mission is to significantly lower the barrier to entry to real-world automation, bringing the power of bits to the world of atoms and unlocking productivity for entire new industries and users.
Our user facing applications and APIs unlock the power of automation for entire new use cases. A relentless focus on simplicity and ease of use brings the revolutionary potential of robotic automation to new users and industries. The Applications Engineering team drives forward the company’s mission by designing solutions around, installing and supporting Standard Bot’s innovative 6 axis robot.
Notes: This role will be required to come into our Glen Cove robotics factory 5 days/week
We are unable to offer Visa sponsorship for this role
You write the code that proves our software works. SDETs are developers first. You build the test-automation and feature test suites the rest of QA runs on, and you validate features in real time alongside the engineers building them, so bugs are caught before they become tickets
ResponsibilitiesBuild and own automated tests and feature test suites (end-to-end, integration)
Validate features in real time during the sprint, partnering tightly with developers so defects are solved as they appear.
Hand off maintainable feature test code to Systems Test Engineers and support them as they extend it.
Build SW-based mocks/simulators for hardware (e.g., grippers) so testing isn't gated on physical hardware.
Develop tooling and infrastructure that makes the whole QA org faster (test data, reporting).
Review designs and PRs for testability and push coverage upstream into development.
Quality-First Mindset: Quality is the job, not a gate at the end of it. You value simplicity, reliability, and velocity in equal measure, treat every escaped defect as a process to fix, and would rather prevent a bug than file one.
Strong Software Engineering: 3+ years (or strong equivalent) writing production-quality code daily in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or similar.
Test Automation & Frameworks: Deep experience in automated test infrastructure (Playwright, pytest, Jest) and CI/CD pipelines.
Systems Thinking: Comfortable debugging networked/distributed systems.
Collaboration: You enjoy pairing with developers and Systems Engineers.
A quality-first developer, first and foremost. Someone who measures their work by what doesn't break in the field, and who wants to apply strong software skills to robotic quality. No robotics background required.
Nice To HaveHardware-in-the-loop or system-level testing
Embedded systems or real-time applications
ROS2, Docker, or robotics software stacks
The salary range for this role is $110,000 to $150,000, depending on experience. We are open to a variety of seniority levels for this role and will build compensation packages that are commensurate with seniority and skill level. Base salary is just one part of the overall compensation at Standard Bots. All Full-Time Employees are eligible for Employee Stock Options. We also offer a package of benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and 401(k) to regular full-time employees.
Skills Required
- 4+ years writing production-quality code in Python, C/C++, or TypeScript with deep test-automation and CI/CD experience (Playwright, pytest, or similar).
- Hands-on PLC programming and experience with industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET) and digital/analog I/O.
- Build and own automated test suites and hardware-in-the-loop infrastructure for controls and industrial-integration.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, work with 24V digital I/O and 4-20mA analog signals, and build/wire test fixtures and PLC cabinets.
- Experience integrating and validating safety systems (e-stops, safety PLCs, light curtains) into automated release validation.
- Strong systems thinking and debugging skills for networked, distributed, real-time systems across software/hardware boundaries.
- Collaborate with engineers during sprints, hand off maintainable test code and review designs/PRs for testability and protocol compliance.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLC platforms and Structured Text.
- Familiarity with ROS2, Docker, or robotics software stacks.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop or large-scale system-level test automation.
- Knowledge of industrial safety standards (ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA 15.06).
