Uplevel is Engineering Intelligence for the Enterprise. Engineering leaders use our system everyday to make key decisions.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to bring people, process, and operational insights together to catalyze change in engineering organizations and accelerate business value.

Our Values

COMPASSIONATE CANDOR: We care about people - each other and our customers - and honor this through clear, direct, and compassionate communication; we don’t shy away from hard conversations.

PROACTIVE ACTION: We are fire preventers (not fire fighters), taking action quickly, thoughtfully and with foresight to stay ahead of challenges looming.

CURIOUS PROBLEM SOLVERS: We understand that learning and gathering data is essential for progress, and we want to learn from our explorations so that we can iteratively get better.

About half of us are Seattle based but we are a remote-first company and hire wherever we can find the best talent. We offer some of the best benefits of any smaller company including generous vacation, a robust health plan, 401(k), professional development, and much more.

We are a remote-first company but anticipate some hybrid in-office days in the Seattle area for this role.

THE JOB

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Software Development Engineer II (SDE II) to join our team. This unique role is a blend of hands-on feature development and advanced technical customer advocacy. You will spend a significant portion of your time designing, developing, and shipping new features. Simultaneously, you will act as a critical technical expert, diagnosing and resolving complex, production-level issues reported by our top-tier customers. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who excels at both writing production-quality code and interacting directly with customers to solve their hardest technical challenges.

This role offers a unique opportunity to keep your development skills sharp while being the technical hero for our customers. You will have a direct, measurable impact on customer satisfaction and the reliability of our product, working on some of the most challenging and impactful problems we face.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Software Development & Engineering

  • Architect, develop, test, and deploy high-quality, scalable software features across our platform using our core stack of Java, Python, and JavaScript.

  • Participate in code reviews, driving engineering best practices, and ensuring high performance and stability of our containerized services.

  • Collaborate with infrastructure engineers to optimize deployment, resource utilization, and monitoring within the AWS environment.

  • Develop internal tools and automation to streamline the support, debugging, and release processes.

Technical Advocacy & Support

  • Professionally represent the company on direct customer calls. Handle questions about how our product works, and how customers can use it to achieve their goals, providing subject matter expertise in engineering workflows and the metrics used to measure them. Additionally providing clear, confident, and empathetic technical communication regarding issue diagnosis, workarounds, and resolution timelines.

  • Act as the primary escalation point for technical issues that impact our customers - diving deep into code, application logs, and AWS metrics to identify root causes.

  • Document detailed post-mortem analyses for critical incidents, outlining the cause, impact, and preventative measures.

  • Translate insights gained from customer interactions into actionable engineering requirements and contribute to the product roadmap.

WHAT IS IN IT FOR YOU

  • Be part of an ambitious early stage startup where we have clear goals, work swiftly under pressure, have strong attention to detail, and put the customer experience first

  • Solve one of the biggest problems in software development: helping engineering teams operate as effectively as possible.

  • Industry leading levels of employee benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), flexible PTO, paid holidays, and other competitive benefits designed to improve the lives of our employees.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Approximately 3+ years of professional experience in software development or a related field.

  • Strong expertise in at least two of our core languages: Java, Python, and JavaScript.

  • Proven experience working with AWS services and deploying/managing applications using Docker or other containerization technologies.

  • Experience with distributed systems and modern database technologies (SQL and/or NoSQL).

  • Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to debug complex issues spanning multiple systems and technologies.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

EXTRA CREDIT

  • Familiarity with container orchestration tools (e.g., Docker Compose, ECS).

  • Experience in a customer-facing role, professional services, or advanced technical support is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with logging, monitoring, and tracing tools (e.g., ELK, Grafana, Datadog).

WHO YOU ARE

We believe the ideal candidate for this role could come from several technical backgrounds. You might be:

  • A Test Automation/Quality Engineer who is ready to take the next step into core product development. You have an exceptional eye for detail, deep knowledge of system behavior, and a passion for turning observed issues into robust, high-quality code fixes.

  • An SRE or DevOps Engineer who wants to apply your deep knowledge of production systems, scaling, and monitoring directly to solving customer-impacting issues. You thrive on system stability and enjoy connecting the dots between infrastructure performance and application behavior.

  • An Early in Career Developer (with ~3 years experience) looking for an accelerated growth opportunity. You want a role with wide scope, high visibility, and the dual challenge of mastering feature development while becoming a professional customer-facing troubleshooter.

We encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet all requirements. Studies have shown that some individuals are less likely to apply to jobs if they don't feel they meet every requirement.
