Job Title:  Senior Chemical Technician
Location: Kennedy Space Center

SUMMARY:

This fulltime position provides technical and logistical support to various research and development laboratories at the Kennedy Space Center. This support includes inspection and maintenance of safety equipment, maintaining chemical inventories, coordinating removal of hazardous waste and expired chemicals, maintaining the laboratories inventory of supplies and consumables, and keeping the laboratory organized. Tasks may also include replacing expired components on pressure systems, assembly of mechanical systems, soldering and wire termination in support of electrical system assembly, and occasional repair of inoperative equipment where practical. Additionally, the position requires experience with analytical instrumentation (GC, GC-FID, GCMS, IC, etc.), chemical management, chemical synthesis, and chemical operations, along with the ability to effectively communicate with vendors and develop documentation such as test plans and reports. Strong technical skills, organizational abilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite are essential. Work will be performed onsite at the Kennedy Space Center. This position may require occasional overtime including weekend work depending on task. Shift work may be required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10 years of related experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation (GC, GC-FID, GCMS, IC, etc.).
  • Experience with chemical management, chemical synthesis, and chemical operations.
  • Experience in vendor communications with Microsoft software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in documentation development, including test plans, test reports, and hardware performance analyses.

PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to perform inspection and maintenance of safety equipment.
  • Ability to maintain chemical inventories and coordinate hazardous waste removal.
  • Proficiency in managing laboratory inventory and supplies.
  • Ability to replace expired components on pressure systems.
  • Skills in mechanical system assembly.
  • Soldering and wire termination skills for electrical system assembly.
  • Ability to perform basic equipment repairs.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and customer interface skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to coordinate work between multiple project disciplines.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects without missing deadlines or sacrificing accuracy.
  • Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Competent in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SharePoint.
  • Will be required to climb stairs to access equipment for trouble shooting.
  • Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Physical requirements are: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
  • Position may require daily individual to travel to different areas on site and some occasional outside work.
  • Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the facility.
  • Climbing ladders and platforms may be necessary.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a similar field. (Master's degree preferred)
